If you watch Anthony Bourdain on TV, as many of us here do, it will have been a recording from another time. Famous Chef Anthony Bourdain has sadly left us by way of suicide.

Goodbye, Anthony. You left us with knowledge and much enjoyment too soon, and no doubt you will be missed by many.

You know, on watching his last episode in Hong Kong, I had a bad feeling, especially with his opening dialog. I felt something was wrong. I have to say I'm pretty gutted about this. He was one of my favorite people to watch. RIP, Anthony. I didn't get to know you in person, but I'm going to miss you. :(

RIP Anthony.

I don't do a very good job of reminding myself of this, but it seems appropriate here:

Thanks, Omar for referencing the Ramones and Anthony. You are right, Chef Bourdain was a superfan who made it a point to let everyone know.that. Even though Tony was a Chef he liked to call himself a cook.He was also a major movie trivia buff. He was so many things to so many people. He was unique, and has been credited to having made a culinary change on how Chefs look at the relationship between food and those who are about to enjoy the creations where it is more of the experience and, although über important, less of a technique that truly matters. .

While it's sad that he had to take his own life , what really bugs me about this is the fact that , there are veterans suffering from PTSD who served in Iraq and Afghanistan who are killing themselves everyday but yet the media doesn't say anything about. But if a celebrity does it such as Bourdain and most recently Kate Spade, the media goes nuts and pushes it in our faces for weeks. This is a major issue in our country right now and if you know somebody who is exhibiting signs of depression , etc., get them the help they need ASAP before it's too late.

Anthony deserves his recognition aside from all this, and yet I agree with you about the downplaying of others. With a military background and having come from a military family I too feel the same for those with PTSD. Help is desperately needed. That’s close to home and around here (with many Afghanistan and other war vets, and now with dangerous Myanmar, coming and going from this city) I can tell you that Canada’s First Nation’s native people far exceed any of those suicide statistics. They are on the average 3% higher than the national average! Whether in Canada or the States some areas are 20% higher than the national average, and in this area the highest in the world by a long shot! Children are heavily affected! I’m constantly bothered by that. You won’t find any mention of these facts on Good Morning America either.

Now ya know.

Things that really matter don’t usually headline or fill the day with the mainstream media anyhow. Nothing against dogs, I love ‘em, but having worked in newsrooms, I can tell you there are days when it is perceived to have no story of worth, a Dog Day, hence you run a nice story about the family pet or something similar.

Sadly, sometimes the revealing story is as close as your neighbourhood. We all have a responsibility and investment in this, and at times the answer is closer than the story.

Nuff said.

Personally, I think there should be no contest, we just have to get our priorities right and check in with our country’s family here where it’s needed at home. Maybe, it’s just a simple recognition, a hug, or a simple hello. At least that’s a start.

Even though Anthony’s gone, I’m sure he would have appreciated his profile bringing to light the further discussion and need for suicide prevention. If only he could have shared his troubled feelings with us as much as his travels and career. What a great gift to others that could have been. Life is always the best alternative, because even a small glimmer is a light to be shared, and it may help others to shine bright, and that glimmer may be the start of something bigger.

RIP AB

They occasionally do mention them, but with a political agenda painting them as somehow now "defective"
Terrible way to treat those who served and live with seen and unseen battle scars.

So true, Rich. My career father saw terrible action at sea with a surfaced U-boat, and then some. His brother was an Air Force photog in Europe during the same period, and both had nightmares over things they saw and dealt with without talking or support throughout their lifes. PTSD was not a term or considered an issue as it is today. I wouldn’t think statistics were kept as they are today.

Growing up on bases I remember hearing various disturbing stories about these brave men and women some of whom were my friends’ parents. We didn’t catch on back then as kids, and there was a general comradeship amongst those who served, but although they had these things in common, they did not know much about PTSD. Others may have, but it was kept out of reach or to themselves. In fact I knew some very abused POWs who appeared fine on a day to day basis. In fact I discovered one as a neighbour only when he cut the lawn and I saw back scars from being boxed outdoors in the Asian sun. My father told me the story of this Navy commando friend and co-worker of his. Who knows how our neighbour slept at night or what he felt in his personal time? Alcohol was often a crutch for that generation with drugs becoming the new fix.

It was and is not uncommon for these individuals to lead two lives. The same holds true for cops and others (like first responders). One for a typical life, one for an abused or abusive life, and/or one for a distressed life filled with anxieities and fear.

I find it pitiful that throughout the decades . . . No! Strike that . . . throughout the centuries we have societies that expect the best from their servicemen and servicewomen and, in comparison, they give so little attention and help in return.

So a big thanks to those who do recognize and contribute concern and support.

An even bigger thanks to those we speak of. You may have been misplaced, but you are not forgotten.

FSB

As well as support after the fact, I’d like to see more attention paid to those involved before PTSD sets in. We will not always be able to address the unknown, and individuals can be affected and/or handle matters differently, but we might save some or ease the pain that comes from the expected or possible.

So sad about Mr Bourdain. I watched him a lot. All war veterans live two lives, don't they. All men with difficult lives live two lives. Sometimes it's too much.
