I'm sorry but Jimmy Vaughan is a mere shadow of what his brother was, even les so.

I would never buy one of his albums.

Jimmie Lee Vaughan........

He's an excellent player in his own right.

Very few guitar players come close to SRV. I don't expect his brother to. That doesn't mean his brother sucks. Are you more then a shadow of SRV?

SRV is very unconventional, and as a result he is difficult to play. If you look at Clapton, he's a classic blues man, with all the chords, perfect rhythm, and searing blues-pentatonic leads. BB King is the orignal bendy blues lead stylist, with plenty of technique needed for his highly complex, multiple bends, vibrato-soaked and then right into a 9th chord songs. BB King also wrote all the backing chords for his second-guitarist, which generally is going to be 12 bar blues in the particular key. With SRV, he's out in another direction more with Hendrix. It's not that his riffs are complex, or that his lead playing is as complicated or technical as many of the leads written by BB King or Eric Clapton, but that SRV's music is a kind of rhythmic tour de force blending high quality lead together with rhythm and really blurring the line between what is lead and what is rhythm, while he also sings. Just to play SRV is reasonably difficult, much less to sing also. Now play it ten times faster and you'll approach SRV, but never get the tone unless you get the giant strings and the high action and tune down. Still, he's very fun to play and really works the rhythm aspect of playing to improve that aspect.

JV is much more in the vein of a classic blues guitar player. The man can play. It's not fair to compare him to SRV. The music just flowed out of SRV, like he was just touched by a ray of sunlight somewhere. In Step is maybe his best and most personal work.

I have to agree. Jimmie Vaughan has a different style than SRV did, but he's very good at what he does and is a well respected player (he has a signature strat after all). I've heard that before SRV hit it big, he was known as Jimmie's little brother.

It seems that every video I see of him up on stage with other people, he comes across as mediocre at best. Don't get me wrong, him being SRV's big brother and SRV even giving him cudos at every chance, I really want to see him shine. Maybe I'm just not perusing the right videos.

I can respect him because he's been in the limelight and obviously I never have, but his playing has never really sent shivers up my spine like a lot of other players. Not quite my taste in terms of blues playing styles. I guess it's not easy being SRV's brother.

I am glad that Jimmie doesn't try to play like his brother.

I wonder if he was ever tempted to try?

Jimmie Vaughn is not Stevie Ray Vaughn. Just because Jimmie does not play as well as Stevie did (in your opinion) does not make him a world class guitar player.

I think that Jimmie Vaughan is a tasteful player-I really like his stuff (especially early on) with the Fab T-Birds. He plays for the song, the song doesn't become his showcase or has to.

SRV was good, but I also remember that a reviewer or two called him the 'Sylvester Stallone of Blues' when he was still alive-and not in a good way. In some ways, I have to agree, SRV could get over-indulgent and over-blown sometimes. Notice on the SRV/Albert King live recording, SRV didn't go 'over the top' or try to outdo Albert. And vice versa. They complimented each other. Same goes tor the Vaughan Brothers album.

Stevie respected Albert King probably more than any other Blues musician. He and Jimmie would pour over old King records for hours on end learning his licks. It was out of respect for Albert that Stevie held back the way he did on that collaboration album.

Not sure what videos you're watching, but next time close your eyes and just listen. You'll then get an appreciation for the sound that comes from his guitar. It's not 'in your face texas blues' like SRV but more of a hybrid of blues sounds.

Might as well compare Steve Vai to BB King given your analysis!! Suggest you find some early Fab T-Birds as suggested elsewhere and listen to where this man goes with his music.

SRV's greatest admirer was his brother. They each respect each others gifts. Jimmie was the inspiration and motivation for Stevie to play. What more can anyone of us say.

Tragic loss....for the brother, for the world.

We all know about SRV's amazing playing. But at the end of the day, he could also front a band, sing, and write new material. The fact is that he could do ALL of them well, especially that guitar playing thing. Many people forget how important the rest of the package was in making him the household name he became.

PS

That's all true, but you have to admit that it's a lot easier to lead a band when their whole reason for existing is for you to solo over them.
