Like others here, I don’t use most social media for all the reasons mentioned earlier. I happily participate with the great Lizards and members in this Forum. :D
My first social connections were made with dial-up and Usenet newsgroups (once I discovered the savings for troubleshooting my mid 90s PC as opposed to expensive long distance phone support). :? I then discussed music and other hobbies with a whole lot less marketing, and hassles etc. Politics and other subjects were international and the conversations had their own groups. All of this 90s tech was pretty much just text though; although, compressed pics and audio could be downloaded. So could malware and viruses.

Later, I dickered with Microsoft’s Comic Chat out of curiosity, but that was dropped. I used Windows Live instead of Skype to do audio and PC cam with my brother across the country because Skype was not up to snuff unless it was a commercial version. I think that may be the case even today in some circumstances. A lot of us were sad to see MS go to Skype, but it was like dropping Beta for the popular VHS. I had an even better software program for improved commercial camera quality. It never got used because of OS and IE/Netscape changes. The biggest problem with socializing on the Net was that everyone was on a different setup of their own choice or, perhaps, that was dictated. Some of that exists today, but there appears to be less options to interfere.

I used email and hard copies for photos and still do today. I didn’t get Photobucket or a similar service, but I signed up for a camera manufacturer’s storage site (only for minimal transfers). It only works with a link though.

I sure miss not getting all the goodies on those missed out sites. Contests, storage, etc. But, I give up on the privacy issues; it’s more of a dependability and longevity approach, however, I try to stick with companies that already have my data anyhow. That’s just about everyone even without usage or permission.

You might want to or not want to discover how your keyboard and/or your desktop works. It’s likely doing double and triple duty collecting and sending personal info. simultaneously to whoever is capable of requesting it (like your apps).

Welcome to the future now.
