My girlfriend just showed me this. They finally found out who he was. No wonder they never caught him, because apparently, he worked for the government after the hijacking.

That's very interesting. A big-time mystery solved after all these years. Thanks for sharing.

I've always heard about the story about this, as far back as I can remember. Reading this again, I just realized he did this a few days before I was born. I never noticed that before. It definitely makes sense he was a paratrooper, and highly intelligent, at that. I'll bet he left part of the cash that was found as a distraction to throw them off his trail.

Another suspect is added to the list. FBI not convinced enough to re-open the case, but someone will sell a bunch of books.

Thanks, for posting this, Paul. I agree with vinyl. “Book him, Dano!”

In the late 1990's, I was the materials manager for an airline with a small fleet of Boeing 727s. Up to that time, my experience was in jet engines so buying parts for airframes was new to me. I learned about the "Cooper Vane" named for D.B. Cooper. The back of the 727 has a hatch called the airstairs that turns into a ramp to load catering and bathroom supplies. It's much safer to bail out of that hatch than by the side doors.

The Cooper Vane is a device that would lock the airstairs from the outside after takeoff. The wind would turn the vane on the device which would prevent the airstairs from opening. As the plane slowed down during landing, the vane would return to its original position, allowing the airstairs to be lowered again. At the time I thought it was pretty clever. Hadn't thought about this in years.

I agree with Vinyl too.

The idea that he was a paratrooper is plausible. But given the extensive background checks to work in the intelligence community, the idea that he worked in intelligence after committing a crime of such notoriety is not, at least not to me.

That's interesting, Steve, and a pretty clever device. I guess I will have to abort my plans to . . . oops, nevermind.

Thanks, for the info on the Cooper Vane, Steve. A good buddy of mine flies in the pilot seat overseas for Air Canada. I’ll have a good conversation about this with him. Should be a good gab.

I would imagine the same device would be installed on the MD80. I never noticed anything like that when I worked for Douglas, but my department handled the control surfaces so I never focused in on the tailcone parts. Either way, I would have known the part as something like 10522071-331.

Ya... definitely better to bail out of the airstairs.
Forward exit and the wing will break your legs. Overwing or aft exit and you go for a self-guided tour of the inside of a JT8D

You sure would want to be, not only in an appropriate seat location, but also in a good seat configuration. Imagine my surprise when I boarded an RCAF Air Transport aircraft to take me home after circumnavigating North America in ‘67. It had all the seats facing backwards!? Taking off and landing was like a cheap carnival ride. At least they pointed towards the rear exit. :P
But, a recent variation on this theme (just to add another 4 inches of leg room) would be a ball of confusion to reach any exit in an emergency. IMHO.
