I have a paypal account, but haven't taken payment this way in a long time. Safe to do? Anything to be careful about? Shipping? Or is Paypal safe and routine? I have a rare piece, so it may take shipping to sell it. No local interest.

Thanks for any advice.

That is a tough call.
Paypal is EXTREMELY friendly to buyers, and I've known a lot of sellers that were screwed when the "buyer" filed a dispute that the item was not as described... Paypal freezes the seller account "pending resolution", which never happens, and ultimately PP closes the account... the seller is out the cash AND the item.

I wouldn't do it. If shipping is an absolute must, I would accept nothing less than a POSTAL money order prior to shipment. Personally, I deal only face to face and in cash, but I understand that is not an option for everyone.

Sell through reverb or anywhere else where you are protected.
The biggest Craigslist scam is with PayPal, don't get screwed.
Selling through Craigslist sometimes takes a long time, if you need the money than you might find it easier to eat the percentage eBay or reverb charge.
Good luck

PayPal screwed me out of $108 about 9 or 10 years ago and they refused to make it right.
I won't use them ever again, in any way or for any purpose.
Period.
They can advertise how safe they are all they want, what with their astoundingly low percentages of bad transactions.
The number is not zero and that is all that matters to me.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

If you decide to accept a money order of any kind, make it clear that you won't ship until the money order has had time to clear your bank. There are counterfeits that can pass the initial inspection at a bank. It can take the bank a week or more to find out it was counterfeit. During that time, the buyer might even contact you and say "Oops, I accidentally made that money order out for $100 more than the price we agreed on, can you send me $100, I really need it right now." Don't do anything until your bank has assured you it was real.

Also, beware of generically worded responses on CL. If it uses wording like "the item" instead of "your Brand X bass guitar", it is a scam. They are meant to be used to scam sellers out of anything of value, so the wording is usually completely generic throughout the email.

IMO, any transaction that isn't cash is not recommended.

But if you're dealing on CL then you are taking a chance meeting someone. I usually meet in a WalMart lot or someplace else you know there is security cameras in place. In fact, in our town and a few others now there are designated spots for CL meetings where suveillance is in place for the protection of all involved.
