Even though Tom Scholz always played an old 1968 Gibson Les Paul w/ a Dimarzio Super Distortion in the bridge, and (back in Boston's heyday) Barry Goudreau always played a Gibson SG, I wonder if anyone has tried to play Boston tunes on a Strat.

Welcome to the Forum msmile024. There are many cover bands playing Boston tunes, at least one of those guitarists is playing a Strat. Have fun here.

I’ve posted this comparison elsewhere, but because some have not seen it and the fact that it somewhat applies here (with consideration that gear differences may apply) I’ll add it in this post for you to determine if it works for you.

This too may help in your decision:

Hope these are of help, msmile024. Nice to have you here. :D

I'll probably get more deeply into your problem, OP, but it will be much easier to give you some advice if you are more specific about what you are doing and what you think is missing in your tone.

But my experience was: after I got a strat with a delta-tone (Am Std) and a vintage RAT pedal, I never had any problems with bringing out the mid range and making the SSS pickups roar like a fire breathing dragon. I do use tube amplification, though... Tiny solid states won't help you in that quest.

Regards...

+1

The Proco Rat is a great way to wring some overdriven Marshallesque tones from your Strat. Add some additional processing (chorus, flange, doubling, etc) as appropriate then dial in a touch of your favorite mode of reverb. Set your amp's tone controls to a mid-favoring centric EQ and you'll have more "fat" than you'll ever need.

As for the amp rig itself, Sergio is correct again. A Frontman 15G or a ten-watt Line 6 just ain't gonna cut it.

First of all, sorry for the typos, I typed the reply in a hell of a hurry.

Thanks a lot, guys.

Indeed, I think the best dirt pedal I ever laid my hands on is the RAT. From Johnny Ramone to David Gilmour, it covers a LOT of ground. It never leaves my pedal chain and let me tell you that the one I own is a very special piece because it was a gift by a dear friend (a forum mate from thefenderforum.com and a couple other internet fora) who sent it to me straight from Texas.

You can make real friends in internet fora if you behave like an adult, you know... :)
anyway, the RAT is the real deal when you got a classic SSS strat and need to raise some hell. I've had most of the common dirt pedals you find in the next music center, and none of them did the job, but this mean little black box does. The "filter" knob is everything you need to go wild on that bar gig or on a stage. And the electronics in this pedal are fit for most anything you need.

Arjay nailed it, also: you won't make any single coils sound REAL thick or heavy without a tube amp. You will get close, but nothing beats a Fender tube amp in that matter.

Finally, the delta tone... A common mod back in the 70s, 80s... and now Fender delivers it to us on a handful of models. A tone knob for the bridge pickup, so you can deal with the treble and make the strat sound great even through a cranked up amp without having the bridge pup sound too shrill.

That's what I do live, and it works perfectly.

If the OP's difficulty is to make a classic strat sound like a humbucker-laden guitar, that's the path I explored. If you can't find a good RAT and your sweetheart strat has no tone knob for the bridge pup, I'd suggest getting a decent tube amp and reducing the treble on it until your strat sounds good at a loud volume, and using a wild distortion pedal.

P.S. another favorite of mine is cheap, easy to find and virtually unbreakable: the Danelectro Daddy-O. Don't let the price or the "overdrive" description fool you: it is a very powerful and versatile dirt pedal. It ain't as stable as the RAT, though.
