Duane and Dickey had an SG they passed back and forth. Lots of pictures of both of them playing it.

I googled this topic before starting this thread without finding anything clear about whether they ever recorded with the SG. But I was surprised to discover that Duane primarily used an ES-345 on the first album.

To broaden the topic: I've worn out several copies of all the Cream albums, and I'm not sure which songs are Les Paul, SG, ES-335, or Firebird.

SRV? I can recognize Charley with the Danelectro lipstick tube pickups. I think I can recognize Lenny, but that might be because he only used her for specific songs. #1, Red, Scotch, Yellow, and Main? I can't tell them apart. I think I know which songs he recorded with an ES-335, but I wouldn't bet money on it.

Of course gear matters. Somewhat. But maybe not as much as we obsess about.

Anyway, anyone able to hear the SG in Allman songs? (Not counting Derek Trucks era  )

Can anyone tell me which Cream songs used the Firebird?

Duane used an SG on Statesboro Blues.

"What happened back then was I had this SG when we started the band, and then I got a Les Paul, my ’57, and when Duane wanted to play slide he would have to re-tune his one guitar every f**** time. And I got tired of it and said, “Here, take this guitar and tune it, and leave it tuned!” and gave him my SG. He loved that guitar. I can't tell the difference as much in guitars as I can in pickups (P90s, single coil, etc)

Agreed about the P90s/single coils as Mike said.

Add to that . . . there are also questions as to who recorded, and with what, as opposed to the live performance grouping. It would pretty much take the originals in the recording session to verify what and who is heard IMHO (with exceptions of course). Who knows? There could even be a Frankenstein axe and custom amp that may never see a stage. It may be as simple as using a vintage or modded version of the stage gear.
