Tomorrow is National Record Store Day. If you have a local indie record store, pay them a visit if you've a mind to.

https://recordstoreday.com

If you're an old fart like me, it may bring back days of your youth, flipping through bins of records, finding the latest music available, or finding something you never heard of before from a well informed employee, and meeting other music lovers and musicians.

There's a lot of great music out there on a physical medium, no matter what you're into, made with Fender guitars and amps.

The web site above has a bunch of great quotes from famous and not so famous artists and others about record stores.

The most succinct quote: "You can't roll a blank on an ipod. Buy vinyl!" -Shelby Lynne

Not that I would condone such a thing.

I loved going into record stores. A local Fort Lauderdale record store, Sid's Records And Tapes, was a great place to buy concert tickets as well. There was a Peaches Records And Tapes that I hadn't gone into for about a month. This was when CD's were really starting to flourish. I went in, and all of the LP's were in boxes on two conference size tables. I was amazed at how fast CD's took over.

I remember Tower Records ripping me off for $20+ for some disks. I don't miss them at all. The only thing I miss was back in the day, you could buy singles in record form. It would usually be the "big hit" plus a lesser known track on the other side. Thus the term "B-Sides". There was something special about that.

Thay’s why I began a collection of “B-Sides”, answer songs. cover versions, and weird experimental stuff amongst other rarities. Mainstream stuff was, well, mainstream, and so available then and now. I have a small used record/CD independent store within a block and next to it a few doors down is a large book store with mostly audiophile LPs and other recordings. One thing about records is that they (or posters within) can look good on the wall with or without album covers. I have recently framed and mounted “Rave On”, a mint 78RPM by Buddy Holly, but I can’t figure out where to mount the thumb drive or iPod.
As for digital, give your ears a treat and a rest and kick back in some comfy strides and get out of those fatigues . . . listen to vinyl - your senses will thank you for it. 8)
Aside from recording features, cost reduction, and, for the most part, flexibility, I think the rush to digital was partly based on marketing more to the masses in an immature matter that would and will develop as it is still in it’s infancy. Besides, once you hear digital at it’s best, you’ll discover the norm is like comparing mass produced multiple generations of junk vinyl or 78s to lesser generations of quality vinyl.

Do I record and playback digital? Sure. But I don’t own a disc cutter or a Neve board either.
Besides, how’s that greatly produced vintage analog recording missing some detail in it’s digital form working out for ya? Probably the same as it is for me.
Needle’s at the ready for record day.

In digital’s defence, I wish I hadn't tossed my scratched records out because who knew back then that many could have been fixed with today’s digital tools.

I still love vinyl too. I went so far as to download a free plugin into my DAW that simulates the dust, scratches, warp and noise of vinyl that you can add to your digital recording for "flavor". It's made by iZotope and called Vinyl if you want to check it out. :)

With all the special limited releases coming out tomorrow, they are expecting a line all the way around the local record store before the doors even open. One of the special limited items is a re-release of the single-album version of "1999" by Prince with an alternate cover (the UK version from 35 years ago that never went into re-print). The good news is I was able to get one off eBay so I don't have to wait in line in the snow tomorrow morning to get it. Only 5000 copies available in the U.S. (yes, my wife LOVES the purple one).

Dang! I must have it wrong. All this time I’ve been working on taking out the scratches and noise.
Thanks, for the link, Marky. That practice is not unlike adding tape characteristics to the sound. The super groups and others are known to master the digital mix through tube preamps and such. :P
Of course, one could always do it the old way.
Thanks, for the heads up on National Record Store Day, Vinyl.
