Thanks, for the post, Paul.

Sad to find out the loss of R. Lee Ermey.

My father was a Warrant Officer with a chum who both were responsible for a never ending flow of 90 new recruits over 13 week’s in a training base. His job was not unlike R. Lee, and Gunny reminded me of a friend of my father who had a similar position while carrying around a small step stool which he would throw to the floor, stand on, and stare at the eyes of a taller new recruit usually in the attention stance and shout, “Recruit! When I talk to you I want you to address me and look straight into my eyes. Now is that clear?!” as the rookie shook in his boots. If that wasn’t bad enough the smaller instructor’s nickname was Chopper. Meanwhile, my father would tell a recruit with half a deck to repaint the poorly finished wall because the paint was inside out.
I tell this story because I knew men like Gunny (both through my Dad while I grew up as a base brat, and from my own military service in the early 60s). These hard nosed instructors were there to save lives (as Arjay pointed out) not to abuse them as some misunderstood. They had a sense of humour often hidden, but they were also good men who would stand beside and behind you. Off the base they were most often easy going, and the majority usually watched over those instructors that weren’t.

I didn’t know Gunny personally, but I know this. He was one h_ll of an actor (military or otherwise) and I loved his work. He was likely a caring family man, and overall a good man. He was cut from the cloth of those like him, and he did them proud.

RIP R. Lee Ermey

From what I've read, a lot of what he said in "Full Metal Jacket" was completely improvised and not scripted.
