Good article, Doc. Over the years I’ve owned a parlor nylon, a Western Jumbo, and a 12 String, and not because, but certainly as a consideration, I ran into some non-related minor issues with my hand.

For the same reasons as most, I decided an electric was going to be my next adventure. Hmmm. What was I going to consider? Then I remembered the first electric in my hands. A buddy’s ‘62 Strat. I never forgot how comfortable that felt. The sound spoke for itself. Long story short, in 2012 a new Strat came home. :D Yes, the modern C neck is different, but not so much that it doesn’t resemble characteristics of the original. Besides, C necks vary and, if like me you play more than one guitar, you may find other profiles will suffice. There will obviously be some that will not be to one’s liking. Chunky versus non chunky is one characteristic that comes to mind IMHO. I’m happy with my decision and so are my hands. I’m sure other profiles would be handy too. :P YMMV
Good thread. Doc.

[quote="Fender Strat Brat"]... YMMV.....quote]

Mine seems to vary back to the Clapton these past 18 years now. Of the six, two are EC's. The other I'm closest to is my Gilmour whose neck is a '57VRI. There's a whole story behind the '57VRI's which begins with the renaissance of Fender out of the ashes of CBS. Not for this discussion.

This is the rig I did most of my music with:Image

It's the '58 whose body CBS swapped out instead of a refinish. I've told that story several times on the Forums.
The neck is original and is probably close to what is on the new American Original 50's. It's what a first got used to on a Strat and played for nearly 10 years. But since the Clapton, that's been my go to.

No prob-lem bro!! That information has been in the bowels of this website for quite some time. I had to go around 'outside' to find it again. Also have a look at the Custom Shop's design guide. You'll find additional diagrams of the neck shapes available through them.

Doc :wink:

I've yet to try a 60's thick "C" as spec'd here :

I like the modern C profiles.
I find the smooth and relatively consistent curve gives me the most ability to adjust how I’m holding my hand.
V profiles are particularly difficult for me because they seem to want to lock me into one position.
The more pronounced the V the less I like it.
Bats are better but too big for me.

My two cents.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

This guitar was an 11/58, Originally owned by my bandmate and still long-time friend. Just had lunch with him today as a matter of fact. The Fender Concert came later. In '62 when Fender released the Jaguar, Gary bought one and a Dual Showman with it. I bought the Strat and Concert from him. I used it professionally for the next four years and owned it for 30 years more. The '58 bursts were transitioning that year from SB2 to SB3. The original finish was a very subtle transition from brown>red>yellow. Very soft. In those years, guitars which looked like they had been drag along 40 miles of bad road. So I sent it out to Fender in '69 to be refinished during the summer when I was taking a course at the University of Vermont. What was returned was the burst finish of that period which featured a very broad red band. This photo is a tad out of focus hence you can't fully appreciate how distinct it was and I actually took a double take when I opened the case. Such is life. Fast forward 25 years and I'm taking the guitar to Mandolin Brothers on Staten Island for appraisal. To my great surprise and consternation I was told that the body was NOT a '58. It was their contention that instead of refinishing the body, Fender [owned by CBS at the time] swapped out the body. The tell-all here is the presence of a shoulder in the control cavity in the 60's bodies which the 50's bodies did not have. The gear was either swapped/traded for more contemporary stuff. I did not have, at the time, the level of knowledge about vintage equipment that I presently have. That amp, by the way, spent 18 months on the stage of NYC's 'Cafe WHA??', safely used and stored during our tenure there between 8/64 and 2/66.

BTW: The guy in the middle.....had lunch with him today as well. He turned 74 last Friday. :wink:
