Please excuse me if there is already a Fender Ads thread. I did a search and a quick scan and did not see one, though I very well could have missed it.

I'm sure most of you are aware that Fender has some pretty sweet advertisements, present and absolutely in the past. You can even buy a set of the illustrated fairytale ads in Merchandise section of this website.

I am writing to inquire, possibly to the forum mods, about a particular old school ad that I would like to get my hands on. It's from 1973 during the CBS era. It is part of a series of magaizine ads with poster offers (check out the fine print) and it looks a little something like this...

Image

Now, I have found a couple of these on Ebay, but I wanted to go to the source first. I didn't think this was an issue important enought to send to Fender customer relations via email, so I figured I'd ask all of my friends on the forum. :)

The question for the mods - is there any way of knowing if any of these (the actual poster of the ad) may still be hanging around Fender and, if so, what is the availability?

The questions for all of you wonderful forum members - any other ideas about where one can get authentic prints of this nature?

Thanks in advance for any help!

~Jim

I just wanted to bump this thread up once in case anyone with input missed it. Maybe we can just make this the Fender Ads thread. In the very least I am posting a few more ads from the above series (or around that same time) - ya' know, something pretty to look at for the trouble of clicking the link. :)

Those are pretty cool, thanks for posting them.

Unfortunately, I think your chance of getting posters of any of them from Fender is very slim (or none).

Were they used in a Fender catalog? I ask because I have a 1976 Fender catalog and it has quite a few full page ads in it (the "Alice in Wonderland" series of ads).

What can you find on eBay?

Oh yeah... I realize the chances of obtaining one of these old ad posters direct from Fender is slim. I figured I may as well throw it out there since we have this awesome forum for discussion. :D

As far as what I have found on Ebay... it's not too much - maybe 15 listings or so. There are actually two of the "Flying Machine" ads listed, and I may have to just chance it and purchase one from there. With things like that it is so hard a lot of times to make sure you are paying for something that is in decent condiditon - yet another reason I figured I'd throw it out to the community first. :D

Thanks for responding, by the way. Here's another sweet oldie I found:

By the way, giving credit - I found all of these old ads and more at this website: http://vintageguitars.org.uk/advertisements/Fender
I surely don't own any of these ads, wish as I might.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the vintage ads guys. I love seeing that stuff. They take me back to when I was a kid. I can almost hear Ringo singing "I wanna be your man" coming out of the AM radio in the kitchen......

+1 Same for me.

Those mid-'60s ads show that the Jazzmaster and the Jaguar were being pushed harder than the Strat ... the Strat a third-place finisher? Never!

Ha!

For me: this is Buddy Holly territory.
Interesting how motivation is on-going. What prompted the purchase of the Stratocaster which ultimately found its way into my hands was the attendance by the original owner at a rock 'n roll show (which for the younger set were'50's 'rock concerts') at which Holly headlined. Gary related that when he saw that guitar, that was it!!
John Mayer relates that his 'aha!' experience was the Chuck Berry segment in"Back To The Future I".

Doc

Lawrence Welk's guitarist Buddy Merrill was one of Fender's early "artists: Buddy played a Stratocaster. When Buddy was drafted, Neil LeVang took over the seat. By then, the Jazzmaster had been marketed. That was the instrument Neil played on the TV broadcasts. When Buddy returned from service, both were retained, and each played their respective instruments. Neil was often seen playing acoustic as well.

As you observed, there was an intensive push for the higher end instrument. It finally found it's niche, but has never been as popular or as well acclaimed as the Strat, even to have received an industrial design award for achievement in the 20th century. Quite a feather in the cap of the three principals involved in bringing it to realization.

I didn't want to part with mine, either!

While this isn't a Fender ad (sorry!), it does feature a vintage Stratocaster.

And it has been one of my favorite ads of all time. Enjoy.

These are great ads. It's kind of fun to compare them with newer ads.
