Let's hope it's all true. I'd hate to have EDM take over.

You know, an interesting thing that I've noticed from listening to Top 40 or pop radio stations, there are quite a few that use guitar in their music. They might not have guitar solos or anything elaborate like that, but I've heard the instrument being used. I've seen hip hop artists even including live instrumentation, including guitars and basses. I think sampling isn't being used as much these days, because of the expense with copyrights and royalties. It's probably easier to have someone just play something over a beat, plus you're creating something a little different.

Good article, Paul. I find the rosewood related sales issue mentioned plausible, but a little weak in impact considering overall supply. While I’m certain it had an effect, who knows if that was substantial in the overall bottom line? Plenty of new and used alternatives were out there, and my guess is that most purchases are not sight unseen; although, today’s generation and the Net are moving in that untouched direction. Maybe, development or model changes were affected, but that would, I’m thinking, affect more of the small lineup manufacturers. Still, sales overall would have indeed dropped; but, to what extent? It’s sort of like when GM is down millions, but rolling in profit. Others we know are not so lucky.
One can only hope Mitt and the gang don’t have a Toys “R” Us plan in sight for Guitar Center.

Just a heads up. I’m not suggesting to not use a store’s services, but I’ve been through a bankruptcy of a music store where my gear sat for consignment. I know repairs suffered the same fate. That presented an unexpected and crap issue I won’t go into. The loss affected me for years, and I cringe at leaving anything behind even when I walk out of a store that appears healthy financially yet alone questionable. I’ll leave things for short periods, but things happen in an hour the same as they do in a month. I’ve seen bankruptcy from both sides of the door and, sadly, most times there are no winners.

With that said . . . whether it’s a favourite Mom and Pop store or a big chain, a possible financial issue is as close as a roll of the dice, unfortunately. On the bright side, we’re thankful they are there for us. :D

I don't know what to make of the whole Guitar Center thing. If they did go under, what would happen next? I know a lot of mom and pop stores closed down because of them, but there are a few that survived, especially in areas that don't have a Guitar Center to begin with. What would fill the void, if anything? There's the internet, which is also a contributing factor for brick and mortar places closing down (which by the way, if you do have any sort of shop, you'd be foolish not to have some sort of retail option online, no matter what you want to sell,) but even that can have it's limitations. Maybe the problems with Guitar Center and Gibson, is they seem like they are run by these huge corporate types that don't care about guitars in the first place, or at least the way they are running things. It doesn't seem like they give a crap about the people playing them, or it could be my perception from all of the information presented, speculation or not. Maybe they just got too big for their britches and are out of touch with what's going on.
