I read this today on the Epiphone news feed. What do you all think?

OK, that's weird. I'll try to fix it.

Well, that didn't work, but I can't delete this post, so I just edited it to remove my attempt to post the link again.

Me either, just reduce the url to
http://www.epiphone.com/ and then use the drop down menu's
news / features and select features.

Yeah, for some reason the link isn't working from me copying and pasting the page address.

I think the issues with Guitar Center are casting a shadow where shadows need not be.
Guitar Center's issues are Guitar Center's issues. You don't see Sam Ash, Sweetwater, or Anderton's in trouble.
OTOH, walk into Guitar Center, they might have 4 actual Gibsons, the rest are Epiphone. They might have 10 MIA Fenders, and several dozen Squier.
They're down to the basses sharing a 12ft wall with used guitars.
Oh! but they have a freaking 24ft wall dedicated to Wylde guitars. Please... 1986 called and wants its guitars back!

Marshall? Practically nothing. I don't even remember any Fender amps. It's really gone downhill just in the last 6-10 months. The employees really couldn't give a crap about anything.
They relocated the Covina store to a brand new location in Glendora... worst-store-ever! I really need to stop by Pasadena on the way home from work and see if it's now as bad, or if it was just Glendora that sucked.

I haven't been in a Guitar Center since 2012, so I don't even know what they're like around these parts. I usually get a lot of my gear from American Musical Supply, since they've always treated me good and have an excellent return policy. There aren't any local shops around where I live in Newport, Rhode Island, which is kind of ironic, since this is where the Jazz and the Folk Festivals are. Well, there were at least 5 of them when I first moved here 15 years ago, but they're all gone now. Then again, there wasn't much going on with live music, either, but that's actually improved vastly the past few years. It's been building up quite a bit.

Newport is great in the summer. Have you ever been to Chan's in R.I.?

Let's hope it's all true. I'd hate to have EDM take over.

Good article, Paul. I find the rosewood related sales issue mentioned plausible, but a little weak in impact considering overall supply. While I’m certain it had an effect, who knows if that was substantial in the overall bottom line? Plenty of new and used alternatives were out there, and my guess is that most purchases are not sight unseen; although, today’s generation and the Net are moving in that untouched direction. Maybe, development or model changes were affected, but that would, I’m thinking, affect more of the small lineup manufacturers. Still, sales overall would have indeed dropped; but, to what extent? It’s sort of like when GM is down millions, but rolling in profit. Others we know are not so lucky.
One can only hope Mitt and the gang don’t have a Toys “R” Us plan in sight for Guitar Center.

Just a heads up. I’m not suggesting to not use a store’s services, but I’ve been through a bankruptcy of a music store where my gear sat for consignment. I know repairs suffered the same fate. That presented an unexpected and crap issue I won’t go into. The loss affected me for years, and I cringe at leaving anything behind even when I walk out of a store that appears healthy financially yet alone questionable. I’ll leave things for short periods, but things happen in an hour the same as they do in a month. I’ve seen bankruptcy from both sides of the door and, sadly, most times there are no winners.

With that said . . . whether it’s a favourite Mom and Pop store or a big chain, a possible financial issue is as close as a roll of the dice, unfortunately. On the bright side, we’re thankful they are there for us. :D

Okay, so here is what I think about it: it was written by Epiphone's marketing department, so when it comes to the article being objective about the future of the company, I'm skeptical. Funny how they conveniently didn't mention this: https://www.thestreet.com/story/14280618/1/gibson-guitar-may-default-if-company-can-t-refinance-its-debt.html It's hard to say what might happen to Epiphone if Gibson goes under. If Epiphone is making a profit, then they might be sold off and survive. Or, Gibson might drag them under.

Frankly, I think Gibsons are so ridiculously overpriced that the company deserves to go bankrupt. But I do hope Epi survives.

No, but I've heard about it. I know a lot of blues bands and artists play there a lot.
