my list

Lead: Slash, Dick Dale, Brian May, David Gilmour.

Rhythm: (early) Andy Cairns, (TSP) Billy Corgan/James Iha, Frank Black, DB Darrell*, Kurt Cobain, (Radiohead) Jonny Greenwood*/Ed O'Brien/Thom Yorke.

I once saw Weezer play on TV live at a German festival.. it was the tightest I had ever seen a band play and still is today*.

I started listening to Korn in the 90's.. once I understood what Jonathan Davis was saying, that music blew me away.

SOAD was a huge influence on me.. in fact I sang Spiders for my NC performance. I have a Vocational Degree in Studio Engineering and Music Performance, 4 years later I went back for top up 1 year National Certificate course.

I threw my heart into it, this song doesn't tolerate half measures.. and I didn't miss a note.. at the end the entire class was: silent.

Then suddenly erupted in applause standing and cheering. :)

Faith No More..

many wretched tracks but then you'll find something like sublime. esp Album of the Year if not then only.

Soundgarden

Chris and Kim's guitar skills are amazing.

Travis

Fran Healy and Andy Dunlop. Local Glasgow band that I also felt the heart of.

-----------------
*(NOT Phil Anselmo’s Satanism)

*Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood is often on 'lead duty', but as this is all mixed in, and Ed does 'lead duty' also. Both do Lead and Rhythm with Thom Yorke mostly doing Rhythm.

*Our then Bassist met their Bassist on their 1994 world tour and played him our demo. Our Bassist's uncle was/is a well known boutique amp builder in Scotland. I have never seen a tighter band play.

Weezer.. guitarists are Rivers Cuomo and Brian Bell. Matt Sharp was the bassist att in 1994.

SOAD .. guitarists are Serj and Daron.

------------

Special mention to Django Reinhardt, who while I do not listen to him in any regular fashion, blew my mind by his playing so much that I realized it was not only 80s shredders that played fast.. this gave me a new perspective on the guitar.. this and FFVII Chocobo music (Surf Rock).. led me to Dick Dale.

Probably forgot a couple of guitarists.. might be back :)

This is so hard, I'll go by age group.

In my preteens:
Tony Iommi, Angus Young, Eddie Van Halen

In my teens:
Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Nuno Bettencourt, David Gilmour
+ every guitar player who played on any Steely Dan track

In my 20's and beyond:
Jeff Beck, Al Dimeola, Larry Carlton

All from my teenage years and from albums that remain on my "desert island" list:

Neil Young - After the Gold Rush
Ronnie Wood - A Nod's as Good as a Wink to a Blind Horse (Faces)
Eric Clapton - Layla (Derek and the Dominoes)

In my early days it was George Harrison and Louie Shelton (Tele guy on those old Monkees records, but I didn't know it back then).

Later on it was Hendrix, Page and, of course, Clapton (he was god back then), Allman and Betts. Never could get into Jeff Beck, though.

Then blues players and blues rockers like "The 3 Kings", SRV, Magic Slim, Buddy Guy, Walter Trout, Jimmy Thackery, and Gary Moore.

I too, like the great guitarists of Steely Dan - Larry Carlton, Larry Coryell, Denny Dias, 'Skunk' Baxter, et al.

Today, I listen to Robin Trower and David Gilmour much more than I did back in the day. It's been a long ride. I've been playing on and off since Christmas Day 1967. I should be a whole lot better than I am. A whole lot.

I stopped playing in the late sixties for awhile, but the following guys got me interested in the beginning. Others influenced me, but a lot of bands were one hit wonders back then while some were covered or backed by studio artists. Add the fact that I became a drummer before returning to guitar with an appreciation for many.

Andres Segovia /
Carlos Montoya

Burl Ives

Bob Dylan

Gordon Lightfoot

Scotty Moore (Elvis)

Duane Eddy

Phil and Don Everly

Al Caiola

Hank Marvin (Shadows)

Nokie Edwards (Ventures)

Glen Campbell

Hilton Valentine
Lead - The Animals
House of The Rising Sun, etc.

B.B. King

Interesting ... I would not have expected to see Neal Young and Bob Dylan called out here. I would say that neither of those influenced me much as a guitar player, per se (although I totally respect those that are, though). I had never been a big N Young fan, but recently put together my own picks for a Neal Young anthology into iTunes (came out to about 1 hr 45 mins total). For me, I am not too crazy about his lead playing, but that dude has the delicate voice of an angel ...

"Be on my side, I'll be on your side..."

The players of 50's rock and roll were the one's who jump started my guitar playing. Chuck Berry would be the primary influence. Holly made me a Strat player for all time. Everything flowed from there as the music evolved. When I returned to playing about 25 years ago I focused more on blues players, and you can have your pick there.

Doc

Tony Iommi, Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana . . . not so much Page, although I loved Zep . . . and Neil Young for his long, psychedelic jams with Crazy Horse.

Got to go with Clapton in Derek & The Dominos. That band was the tightest I have ever seen or heard. Second would be Duane Allman followed very closely by George Harrison. Everything these three did always spoke to me!

My "most influential"?

Steve Gaines - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Toy Caldwell - The Marshall Tucker Band
Dave Hlubek - Molly Hatchet
Duane Allman - The Allman Brothers Band
Walter Becker - Steely Dan
David Gilmore - Pink Floyd
Mark Knopfler - Dire Straits
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Jimi Hendrix

Of course there are a lot more that are 'influential' to me...but those are my most influential.

There is a myriad of guitarists who really influenced my playing.Like most Baby Boomers my initial incentive to play guitar was when I saw The Beatles on Feb. 9 1964 and John Lennon and George Harrison immediately became my life-long heroes and mentors. My next huge influence was Chris Britton, the Trogg's lead guitarist his pounding, throbbing percussive strumming style really impressed me and it was imprinted on me so deeply that my strumming style is still strikingly similar (some have said identical) to his,in fact the first rock song that I learned was "Wild Thing".The guitarist who spurred me into becoming totally obsessed with the guitar was Jimi Hendrix. The first time that I heard songs such as "Foxy Lady" with its intro of feedback climaxing into an orgasmic crescendo and "Are You Experienced" with it's incredible backwards guitar and risqué lyrics,I was absolutely enthralled and immediately started sequestering myself into my little music room in our basement for 6 or 7 hours every day and with many days exceeding 10 hours.I played Hendrix albums over and over, trying to decipher how he achieved such cool effects as the "air raid siren" sound that starts at the 5 minute mark of "Machine Gun" and the explosive and screaming sound effects he created in the Woodstock rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner" (I have always loved that anthem, even though I'm Canadian) but I still get goosebumps the size of oranges whenever I hear Jimi's version.I tried to pay homage to Jimi over the years and to turn people on to his music by playing covers of his songs .I know that I could never hope to achieve his degree of fretboard virtuosity and technical skill, but I guess I must have done a passable job of doing his covers-at least I never got booed off the stage.Anyway the most important thing that Jimi's music did for me was to lead me to find the conduit that flowed from my soul to my fingers.I will always owe Jimi a huge debt of gratitude because that's the most important part of playing-yet so many forget.
