It truly surprises me that there's such a large market for guitars. Are there really that many people dedicating the time it takes to play? This whole guitar thing seems like the case of fly fishing, where I see lots of people buying stuff but never see anyone fly fishing. It also seems like handguns, where lots of people buy them, but there aren't that many people at the range shooting. Hmmm.

Is there a huge mass of unused guitars out there?

I would estimate that half of the United States' teenagers own a guitar of some sort. Probably 25% of them own two - an electric and an acoustic.

Then there are people who have dozens of guitars.

Then there are places that use guitars as decorations... there's a show on CMT that has the walls covered in Gibsons. I'm hoping they're Chinese fakes, and not real Gibsons.

Maybe there is a void...
Somewhere within this massive void exists:
many individual missing socks to a pair
Lost keys & wallets
Plenty of spare change
And a planet load of never heard guitars! LOL

Guitars are kind of like skis, snowboards, golf clubs, skateboards, surfboards, fishing rods, etc. etc. etc. in that many people out there probably own one, but not everyone that owns one does it all the time or uses it all the time....

My personal growing up, it seems that lots of people I knew had a guitar and played it. I remember going to parties where there always seems to be at least three guitars. A number of people at the party always knew how to play the guitar and were often the entertainment. I also remember friends of mine going to parties or any other place without a guitar, yet they always had a pick in that little pocket, above the main right hand pocket of their jeans, just ready at any time, to play a guitar, should one suddenly materialize.

I was reminded (flashback) about this, just recently, when I was out with a friend, a guitar was suddenly available, and he pulled out a pick from that little pocket in his jeans, and played that guitar. I had no idea he was carrying that pick. He told me afterwords, that he carries a pick wherever he goes. But then he's a hardcore guitar player that practices two hours a day, no matter what.

I wear a necklace with a thin brass guitar pick on it. The pick comes right off for emergency usage.

How does a "brass" pick work, anyway. Never tied a medal one.

It's funny, but it sounds exactly how you think it would sound. I only use it in a pinch. Too scratchy for me.

I dont know about buying guitars in general but my opinion as far as Ebay or Craigs List is that greedy people buy them. The folks that want to make a fast buck, you know buy cheap sell high. I just say that since I can never win an auction or call in time to get the deal. To many so called collectors. I feel the same way about guns to. To many collectors.

I have a couple of aluminum ones I only use for strumming chords on my 12 string--for single notes--and on my other guitars--it does feel scratchy.

And I usually have a pick on me.

So how many are sold in the USA per average year?

Electrics?
Acoustics?
Amps?

Good topic!

Guitar's really easy to play. Lots of people play. If you can play three chords and stay in reasonable time, you can play guitar and play music.

Guitar's impossible to master. Whenever somebody seems to be a master of the instrument like Eric Clapton then somebody else will come along with a totally different approach like Duane Allman or SRV, to show the possibilities are endless. All of the approaches are legitimate.

I carried a pick in the small pocket of my jeans for the longest time, but I kept losing them on laundry day. Rarely got to use them anyway.
