So as you're tearing a.s.s down that highway, there is some way to know if a new car has entered the same highway? I'm back to the drones but I guess there is some other way of knowing?

What if a car pulled off to the side of the highway at 11pm for an emergency stop, and you didn't see it when you did your drone survey. Now it pulls back onto the highway at 1am. There are too many unknown variables.

What is an empty highway? I've never heard of that. I think you have to assume all public roads are not empty. That is unless you do a few hours of surveillance with a drone (I'm guessing you didn't).
Then you've never driven I-70 across Kansas at night.

There are nice roads in NY. Upstate around Cooperstown, Delhi, and other small towns. You can't go fast. Too many hills and curves.

Many times I’ve traveled most of the upper states including Montana and North Dakota, and the Canadian prairies where the highways look like Tony Schumacher could come past you at 336.15 mph at any time.

I’ve mentioned I did 120mph in my Charger. That was not planned, but warranted in my opinion. On a very long straight stretch out of season I had an out of country Cadillac full of suspicious looking morons that refused to let me pass while they sauntered below the speed limit changing their speed sporadically. I was travelling back home to the next province.

After pulling back and letting them have the road for awhile, it was plain to see that I wasn’t going to pull over on a barren highway nor was there a town or establishment to take a break. My patience ran out.

I held back, and since we had our seatbelts flopping in those days, I told my wife of two years to buckle up as I did the same. I’m pretty sure these guys wanted a show and I wasn’t there to entertain them. Never-the-less I ran what I brung with a 3 month old muscle car with plenty of reserve power, passing at 120, and I did it for much longer than a quarter mile just to seal the deal.

Was I stoked? No? Was I pi- - ed? You betcha. I put my wife, myself, perhaps those jerks who might have tried to keep up with some white knuckles in the Caddie’s back seat shaking, and perhaps, a side road farm girl or farmer cutting the ditch at risk. Maybe, a combine or newly oncoming traffic, livestock, or road junk like a lost retread would reveal itself.

You haven’t lived until you pass someone with a semi coming at you and your car chokes when you have nowhere but forward to go. Thankfully, this was not the day for that and problem solved.

Anyone who has seen a race may have seen the track being walked by humans who check for the least little debris, slicks, and oddities on the route. Yeah, I know it has to do with speed, but it also has to do with organization and control. The track is also the same build throughout. It is not a patchwork quilt where some is good and some is bad.

I’m off the lecture podium for now, but for me there is a difference between being on the Autobahn, motorways of Europe, the track, and the highways. I know which one I would put my faith in the least. Ask the pros or watch some wannabe/neverbe. It’s like the guy who customizes his car or truck incorrectly. Just sayin’.
YMMV

FSB

Tip: I got to my refusal stage of signing a dotted line to join the Mounties on that very same highway in Saskatchewan. (I didn’t want to sit for hours brown bagging on that stretch of lonesomeness. On the other hand, I could have asked the drivers to turn the music down since I was told I wouldn’t have been allowed any). My tour of special order police Mercury Marauders showed that they were regularly hopped up on the weekend by their drivers and an available mechanic if desired. I’m sure other police departments do similar. Fast cars and loud amps are a dime a dozen. What you do or don’t do with them makes it cool. IMHO.

So if ya wanna go fast legally there are opportunities that will provide the car, and today there are some way cooler and faster than the Marauder which was dynOmite for it’s time. Maybe, there’s a Starsky and Hutch job out there.

Or maybe a real racing career or hobby
(even for old guys like me). That’s kinda cool too. 8)
I’ve said it before. Each to their own (as long as you’re not causing a problem in my lane. I love cool cars, and like cool smart drivers). Today I’m hanging out safely with my loud Mustang IV. :P

Northern Montana, I'd be more worried about a moose.

Quite right.
That would indeed be the greatest concern.
You wouldn’t want to be doing such driving at dawn or dusk when animals are coming from or going to the river or their bedding grounds when the likelihood of an animal crossing the interstate would be highest.
Even though you’d be almost guaranteed not to see a single vehicle.

Really? No houses anywhere nearby any highway in Northern Montana?

Toddler found wandering along Highway 288 in Houston

Toddler found playing alone in the middle of Highway 190

No, there really aren't any houses in Northern Montana, nor the middle of Kansas, panhandle of Oklahoma and Texas etc. There are many wide open spaces all over and you won't find anything but a stray cow or moose. For that reason, be careful and be safe. They can total your vehicle and send you to the morgue (assuming you are found) :)

Yup.
I've been on that highway a number of times.
Almost always in winter.
Heading south to find dirt biking areas.
Rexburg, St. George, Glamis, Grand Canyon Monument, been to all of them and many more.
That Montana part of it is a long, lonely highway until you get to parts south.
You can literally drive for a half hour and see one car going the other way on the divided highway.
Going your way? Maybe nothing until you get close to a hamlet.
You learn to pay attention to the signs so you know where your next fuel stop is.

There are places in Northern Canada like that as well.
Places where you drive for 2 hours without seeing any evidence of another human being.
I'm talking the far north.
In the near north there are plenty of people because of the natural resource industries.

Sometimes when I'm driving those highways I will come reasonably close to diming the amplifier in my car stereo.
Does that count as staying on topic?
LOL

Just curious how many people enjoy dimed big amps.

I once owned a Line 6 AXSys that had an Soldano SLO amp simulation setting.....and....... some time later my neighbor living in the house next door stopped by and asked that I not play that weekend in that her son was studying for finals.

Doc

So you could load 'em up on a flat bed with a portable generator, haul out to the middle of nowhere and let 'em rip!! A veritable wall of sound, that!

C'mon, that's a cheap shot. Yes, in rural areas there are clusters of humanity. Surrounded by miles and miles and miles of no humans. The occasional ranch/farm house off in the distance. There are road signs and maps to alert you that you're approaching a population center. As well as your eyes -- you can see towns/cities from miles away.

A picture of Dallas doesn't tell you what west Texas is like. Millions of people here, but out in the desert the rattlesnakes outnumber the humans.
-------------------
I don't completely disagree with your stance. I'm surprised that so many of us blithely admit to triple digit speeds, and that there's so little finger-wagging directed toward speeding.

The things I've done in cars are far more reckless and dangerous than my loud amps.
