You guys can put up all the statistics, facts, and graphs that you want; doesn't change a thing for me.

When I buy a car that has a speedometer that goes to 140 mph. I don't feel like I have to immediately go out and see if it actually will go 140 mph....but for some reason when I buy a guitar amplifier, I DO have to see what it can handle. I have "dime'd" every single amp I have ever brought into my house.
Do I stand in front of them and play for hours? No. Do I stand in front of them and play for minutes? Some times. Seconds? Yes...especially that Mustang IV---LOUD AND PAINFUL...maybe 2 or 3 seconds tops with that one.
Been playing for 36 years, and my hearing is just fine.

Some of you are like a doctor for the love of Christ. When I go in for a D.O.T. Physical every two years (Commercial Drivers License) I absolutely lie out of my $@! when they ask if I smoke; because I don't want that 20 minute lecture on how bad smoking is for me.

Moral of the story: If it feels good, do it. You only live once, and you take NOTHING with you when you die.

P.S.- Put the freaking Purell in the garbage and eat some dirt...it only makes you stronger.

White Dog, I like your style.

I get the feeling that some people here would freak out if I had asked about ever seeing how fast your car could go. Or if you've ever driven over 100mph.

And that I'd get all sorts of lectures if I said that when I did those things on public roads I tried to be as safe and responsible as possible by doing them on empty highways.

Hey there, White Dog. If that’s your groove, go for it. I was young and foolish, but now I’m just foolish (a little bit less). I believe everyone is the architect of their own fortune as long as someone doesn’t dictate otherwise.

Me. I had my new ‘73 Charger up to 120 mph, and that wasn’t the pedal to the metal. I knew it could do more; but, I only did it to rid myself of a dangerous situation, long story short. Previously, I owned a sweet ‘63 Mercury Comet that I raised 6 inches in the back and dropped 6 inches in the front. It was fast and loud, not as much as the Charger, but equally as much fun. See the pattern?

I also have a Mustang IV and you are so right . . . it IS loud next to my drums.

Thankfully, with both the Charger and the Mustang I’ve managed to live through it all. 8)
Probably because I came to my senses even if I miss that fun. On the other hand staying on that dangerous route I might have missed the fun sooner and longer. Besides, whatever the case, I never see life as a drag.

YMMV

One thing we can agree on is that the Mustang doesn’t go to 11. Maybe I should raise it 6 inches.

I'm one of those old guys that likes loud. If you still have your eyesight and hearing, cherish it! I can still hear pretty good, but be careful. My vision is not so good, but nothing to do with volume. You can damage your hearing with just one episode of extreme loudness. Also, don't look directly at the sun.

Not from me you wouldn’t.
As a younger man I was all about the speed.
Quickness too.
Maybe quickness more but still speed.
Fastest I’ve gone in a car is 255kph, roughly 155mph.
It was a Jag and I didn’t see top speed because I ran out of room and had to shut off.
Fastest I’ve gone on a bike was 285kph, roughly 170mph.
That was a Yamaha R1.
Scary bike.
Way too quick for its own good.
At 160kph, 100mph, you can do a couple of downshifts and wick the throttle and loft the front wheel 2 feet in the air.
That’s not jerking it up on up on purpose.
That’s just powering it up.
When that happened to me, shortly after the speed run, I turned around and took it back to its owner.
I’d had enough adrenaline for one day.
My own bike tops out at 270 but I’ve only done that once, just to see.
I achieved rev limiter in top gear, speedo said 270.

If it’s fast and loud you need try this:

or this:

A/A Fueler =
approximately 150 Decibels

In an earlier post I said I didn't have the courage to dime my 85 watt Twin Reverb. That was a lie. I did do it. It was frightening and I don't like to admit that I did that. When I was young, I played my Super Reverb at 10 always. We always played in a gymnasium.

Later, when I became more responsible, I got one of the last real British-Leyland MGBs. The manual said it could go 103 MPH. I set out to prove it several times with the top down. Sure enough, it went that fast and beyond. Talk about a ride. I'm still here to tell about it. I still dream about that car.

Yah,
That first video was pretty much useless.
First off the mics are touching the grille cloth.
I never saw anybody lay down and press their ear to an amp at max volume in my life.
124dB is not sensible or reasonable.
Then, a HotRod Deluxe is louder than a Marshall full stack.
Uh, huh .....

I’m actually surprised the top fueller scored that high as well.
I know how loud they are.
I’ve been to the drags.
You can feel it in your chest.
Still, 150 is pretty high.
That must have been right at track level, right at the car.

Like all forms of energy, the strength of the effect is inversely proportionate with the square of the distance from the source.

The race fans aren’t getting 150 from where they’re sitting.
Likewise, club patrons aren’t getting 124 from an HRD.

You hit the nail on the head.... The mic was right up against ONE of the cones.

100w into eight 12" Celestions, the mic only picked up 12.5 watts from the Marshall, while it was picking up 20 watts from the HR's 12". The HR is also open-back, so there is no pressure interference from the other cones, allowing the cone to move more freely.
A half-stack would likely have beaten the HR with 25 watts into each cone under those conditions.
Had the mic been 10ft away, of course the Marshall would have come out #1.

You may have a point on the first video. Can’t say for sure. However the measurements were made . . . the car is heavily invested with Marshall sponsorship. I’m sure they would have had something to say about the results.

As for the dragsters, there are enough measurements to be found that used a variety of instruments and methods and taking it all into account it pretty much averages out in that area of decibels. Some are less under conditions, but it should be noted some are more. So on some cases the 150 decibels are conservative.

Here is an article that includes both a cheap and an expensive sound meter. (You’ll have to scroll down the article to read that test, etc.; but you might find it interesting as is).

http://www.espn.com/espn/news/story?id=5759488

Sure you won’t get that loud on the stands, but stand an amp playing distance away and good luck with that.

Straight line, I live 6.61 miles from the starting line at Pomona to my front door.
Included in that distance is crossing two major east/west freeways and the entire city of Pomona.

I can stand at my front door and clearly hear the top fuelers running during the Winternationals.

A 100w amp can't come close to competing with that. I can't hear the concerts that are held during the fair, and those PAs are running more than 100w.

I agree with you on that one, Rich. No typical amp of 100 watts or so can compare with those babies. I spent some time at the drags here too. Not the high profile of Pomona, but still sanctioned. I still believe the movement of air and other variances can change the audible result. I know that’s true from cannon fire as an example.

Maybe this will change the comparison amongst amps and a dragster.
Note another 150 db spec for the Fueler

The video was from 2014 so the speed is likely upped today.

As with all things, context matters.

Driving way over the speed limit on a closed track: Go for it, have fun! (you know the risks, right?)

Driving way over the speed limit on public roads: Totally irresponsible!

Diming a 100 watt amp when you're home alone: Go for it, have fun! (you know the risks, right?)

Diming a 100 watt amp when other people are in the room: Totally irresponsible!

What is an empty highway? I've never heard of that. I think you have to assume all public roads are not empty. That is unless you do a few hours of surveillance with a drone (I'm guessing you didn't).

There are places where there is a such thing as an empty highway.
Even in USA.
Get on the I-15 in northern Montana.
20 minutes north of Great Falls you’ll find a whole lot of room to explore the upper limits of pretty much anything you might be driving.
There are also highways in Nevada and Arizona with very little traffic, albeit perhaps not interstates.
