The PRS Stratodisaster is kinda, sorta, SRV meets Eric Clapton meets John Mayer in a Purple Haze. Here's a long lost video, among others he made during the time of the great 1/500:1/83 project which we all weathered. If you listen closely to what Mayer says about his preferences in guitar and pickup design, Mike Eldred's AND John's comments about Mayer's interfacing with the staff at Fender, you realize that all the yada yada from Mayer/PRS about Mayer not being able to realize his goal with FMIC is such vendetta soaked marketing hype that you want to puke. It's the same game all over again. Just listen to this and lay it against everything you've read in print, and watched on videos regarding Mayers work with FMIC and the launching of Mayer's project with Smith.

Mayer worked with PRS to design the Super Eagle for Mayer's 'Grateful Dead' journey. That was a well crafted instrument. He would have done well to stick with that platform moving forward instead of trying to re-invent Leo.

As a post-script, some of what John admits to regarding his years in high school gives me pause. Any kid sitting in detention hall sorting out the specs of his yet unrealized signature guitar in a career that's hardly begun? One can certainly dream, and work steadfastly towards a goal, but IMHO this guy still has unresolved issues which are beyond the scope of this forum and which no amount of celebrity will resolve.

Ive heard that JM was so unhappy with Fender when the custom shop refused to build his signature strat with a 7.25" radius neck ;)...and I guess PRS has figured out to make the body resonate with finish on.

I've heard rumours saying John wanted to emulate some sort of Jerry Garcia chops.

Been reading this with much interest, and I must say the Silver PRS probably plays well enough, but that guitar is just plain fugly. I've owned a PRS and it was a great playing guitar but I am kind of surprised that PRS would go this route. I kind of thought they were so professional and quality oriented that they wouldn't dip the company into what sure appears to be an obvious petty move by JM.

FWIW

Not a rumour. As I said in my earlier post, that's precisely why the guitar was designed. He was going to tour with a 'Dead' tribute band and sought to capture the tones of Garcia's instruments.

Seems like he just fell off the planet. I used to have his private email address but that went cold more than 5 years ago.

John would probably opt for a Cripes Lightning Bolt for those shows IMO.

........and the engineering degree needed to play it, as well. It turns out that Mayer/Smith did quite well with the guitar they designed and the 100 copies which sold immediately.

Looks weird. Why copy, Fender strats are the best. I have his signature model. Neck is chunky pickups are very low output. Frets are tall. Personally if I created my sig Strat it would be my 2006. Modern profile is perfect. Rosewood preferred. I like 22 frets better. No gloss on neck preferred. Sounds great. And modern coating why not nitro chips and does an electric really breathe? I did take off cover on back to be cool. And new G&G tweed case is great just got it. Looking forward to Dead in June. PRS ugly nuts ugly headstock. Tried many at a show and truly the McCarty was best but not better than my 92 les Paul studio with ebony board wine red. I think ultimately if you got this new guitar and later got out your Strat it would sound better.

I had a go on one last week.
I think it's a really nice guitar. Feels good, and sounds good.
Haters are gonna hate, and the rest of us just carry on regardless.

I'm sure it feels and sounds good. It's just the look of that body style with any other headstock. It's the same with a Les Paul or 335 style guitar made by anyone other than Gibson/Epiphone.

Collings do a rather lovely looking instrument that's reminiscent of an ES-335
