There are basically 2 answers to this question. ( there are sub-answers, but I digress)

1.) None of your freakin' business.
2.) I needed the money at the time. (The neck needed a re-fret, and I got a decent amount of money.)

Choose whichever works best for you. I did.

A classic Pete Townsend response, that.
 Yep! Ya got that right, Doc. My former hero Keith Moon would never have thought of that. He would have just kicked his kit all over the place.

In the 70s?
We didn't know and didn't care that our guitars and even parts would be worth more than we paid for them.
They were used guitars. The bridge pickup from my '78 Strat is sitting in the neck position of a heavily modified Hondo H1, I think I MIGHT still have the neck pickup somewhere, but I haven't seen it in 30+ years.

Rich,
Thanks for the support.

In the 70's when the guitar was only 5 years old, I started "experimenting". It inspired me to learn about electronics, and tube amps. In the process, the body became hacked up, but I learned about adding a third pickup, series-parallel wiring, etc. In the process, I also learned about programming mainframes with punch cards, and some other stuff including working in a analog 24 track studio with things like plate reverb, noise gates, and parametric equalizers. I don't regret a minute of it.

I kept the guitar until 2010, and sold the neck, serial number plate, and the bridge pickup to pay medical bills.

As far as I know, those pieces are now part of a "partscaster" that if you did a serial number search for would come back as a blonde 1967 telecaster, but they are on a sunburst telecaster.

How many here have needed money for medical bills in spite of having insurance?

Yeah, if I had it to do over, I wish I would have kept it, but I'm not going to beat myself up over it. I'm sure as hell not going to let anyone else do it.

I choose option #3.
3). Stop freaking out Vinyl, it was a rhetorical question.

And I'm not "beating you up for it". We all do what we have to do, when we have to do it....if you had bills to pay, you had bills to pay. I'm just happy you didn't part it out for a bag of weed....and if you had, it STILL wouldn't be any of my business; but I couldn't promise you that it wouldn't annoy me.
Have a great day :)

One of the things I've learned across the 11 years as a member of these Forums is how sterile the written word is in the absence of vocal inflections facial expression, and body posture. We have often seen these little hiccups occur. Notwithstanding that, strong friendships have been forged amongst individuals who have been patient and understanding as their conversations flashed back and forth across the world. It should always be that way.

Doc

Yup! Well said, Doc. I agree with you. Even sign language for the deaf uses facial expressions to differentiate the differences when words are signed. Sometimes, writing may be tongue in cheek. :P Many times it comes off like a questionable CNN sound bite.

That doesn’t surprise me. It is said that there is irony in that those from the media, on a personal scale, are known to be poor communicators face to face. Sometimes, poor communication giving and/or receiving happens online too.

Fender Forums being an excellent exception, I’m not one for mass marketed social media. YMMV. With others I’ve seen a lot of ballyhoo and verbal donnybrooks including the flaming of others. I found BBS useful in the early days. If you were inclined to get in a heated argument that was available too, but more so in well known threads where that was the name of the game. Even there a sense of humour would show up to ease the self inflicted pain which was expected.

I might like Fender, you might prefer that other make. I might like Daphne Blue, you might like Black. I might like Surf, you might like Rap. Others may like Daphne Blue with Black, or Surf with Rap. I think there will be an opening for disagreement there. We might even try to convince the others to sway their opinion. In the end no biggie IMHO. The French have it right with “Vivre la differénce”. Works for me.

I appreciate the comradeship held here, and we all have something in common. Friendship and fun comes to mind.

I’ll finish with a quote from Doc (no I’m not paying you royalties, Doc)
“It should always be that way”.

Peace!

White dog,
Apologies, I have a temper, and it gets the better of me sometimes.

No worries. As these guys pointed out, sometimes written word gets misconstrued...and it's happened to me as well; even in my personal life with my best friends via texting.

I have been playing fender since 1962. that's when dad bought me a musicmaster and a Princeton amp. over the years I have owned Gibson, prs, Ibanez, and others. great guitars, but never bonded with them the way I did with fender.

today, I have 3 strats, a blackface twin, and a deluxe reverb type amp made by allen amps. my opinion-fenders are the best! (or at least for me).
