For rock guitarists, that ... to me ... is hands down Buck Dharma of Blue Oyster Cult. When talking about the "best" of that era, he is never named and was a crushing guitar player ... along with also singing and songwriting. A superb talent.

While he may not be the most underrated I think Jorgen Ingmann has an identity crisis as being less appreciated than he deserves. Take Apache for example. Bert Weedon did it first but the composer Jerry Lordan didn’t like it. While I am a huge Shadows and Ventures fan, I and others prefer this version (listen to the run that simulates horses galloping with Jorgen as one example) then listen to the less complicated playing from Hank.

Here’s Jorgen’s original:

Here’s Hank and the Shadows original:

I think The Shadows sound good. Real good. They sound raw and not unlike a band at a high school dance in those days. Not bad, but not great either. This was before The Shadows perfected it.

Now here’s the difference. There are no weak links with Jorgen because by this time he already was a polished performer, and it shows with him being the only player on the record! No band! Even the Ventures were a combination. Jorgen’s over dubs took the cue from Les Paul.

Many would disagree, and that’s okay, but record sales beginning in those days (and today) are not necessarily related to a better recording. I also think Jorgen would have done better on this side of the pond or in England, although he did okay. It’s okay for Hank and the boys to share the accolades, they have plenty of other great tunes. IMHO.

An instrumental player who kind of got passed over, I always liked his style:

Never heard this version before. The amount of creativity and skill that was put into this is pretty inspiring. I can't find a video of him playing it.

Mike Campbell.
He reminds me a little bit of Warren Haynes.
Not for his style of play, obviously.
Rather for the way everything he does seems just a little bit understated but at the same time being exactly what the song needs; nothing more, nothing less.
He's not there to show off (which I hate); he's there to make the music better which he does amazingly well.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

You are right. There’s not much video of Jorgen soloing, and little if any with Rock. He primarily played Pop and Jazz, and is mostly seen with his vocalist wife Grethe who seemed to have more love for the camera as videos show. It appears that Jorgen was, perhaps, a quiet guy who preferred to just play. Can’t say for sure.

I did find these though:

I have never seen a video of him playing Apache, and I find that strange. Maybe, there’s a story behind that. It’s not uncommon for videos to be destroyed or go missing from the originators over time; however, I’m sure he has other gems out there.

Just as I was about to post the above I discovered the real story behind why Jorgen Ingmann had left historical fame and fortune to others:

I think Leslie West is one of the underrated guitarists.

Happy to be here, thanks!

Thanks for the shares, I think it's very interesting to look behind the curtain and learn about the backstory.
It must have been extremely exhausting for Jorgen, to be under the constant weight of his own perfectionism and stage freight.

I feel sorry for the guy that he felt it was necessary to retire (quite early) from the thing he had been working on for his entire life.

My vote is Tommy Bolin - listen to Billy Cobham's Spectrum album. Amazing!

+1 for Mike Campbell, I agree with all of your statements.

I would like to add Gary Richrath to the list. He was a major force in shaping R.E.O. in the early years. I grew up in the middle of the country in the 1970’s and they were as very popular band for many years before the hit album. After the hit album they lost me. They were the first band I heard that was SO much better live.

Rest in peace Gary.

Include me as a Mike Campbell admirer.

I'll add Terry Kath to the list of most underrated guitarists. When you think of Chicago you think of horns, but his brilliant playing really drove that band.

He is usually overlooked in discussions of great guitarists but Jimi Hendrix once told one of the horn players in Chicago " your horns are like one set of lungs, and your guitar player is better than me." High praise.

A guitarist whom I never appreciated until later in life is Roy Clark. I remember watching him on Hee Haw when I was a kid, making goofy faces and yucking it up with Buck Owens and Grandpa Jones. I never realized just how great a player he is until a few years back when I watched some clips of him tearing it up!

From what I can tell he still performs, at least occasionally. Keeping my fingers I'll get a chance to see him play before he totally hangs it up.
