Bad news for Gibson guitar fans.

https://www.iheart.com/content/2018-02- ... pay-debts/

Seems the folks at Nashville are into deep financial trouble.

Gibson is an important guitar maker. I hope they will be ok.

CMI, Norlin, Henry J. The Gibson brand has had several owners in my lifetime. They sold their original factory in Kalamazoo and built different factories.

The Gibson brand won't go away. Someone will buy the name and some/all of the manufacturing assets. Some of the high-end stuff will continue to be made in America.

We're likely to see their Chinese Epiphone factory start producing the lower-end Gibson models. Or possibly making the bodies, necks, pickups and shipping them to the US to be assembled.

I'd like to see some different leadership at Gibson Corp. Bring back the rest of the 'Elitist' Epiphone line. I'd rather have an Elitist Epiphone Sheraton or Les Paul than most of the Gibson line.

Little known fact: Les Paul was working in the Epiphone factory in New York City when he created "the Log".

I was about to mention that but you got it first.

It seems to me that we are at a time in history when rock 'n roll and for that matter, pretty much all guitar music is slowly dying out.
There are resurgences in small niche markets but overall, most people nowadays would rather listen to what I call "club music" and they view guitar music with disdain.
We've all seen the articles written on the subject many times.
Guitar companies are feeling the squeeze.
Rap, HipHop, Dance, Rave (and other words and names which all tell me I won't like it) have taken over and they don't care for our tools.
Even country music is on the decline since the big boom in the 90s.
Country is slowly becoming rock 'n roll in an effort to save itself from extinction but it's not far behind.

With this kind of market climate it just doesn't seem like a good idea to me for an iconic guitar company to compound high prices with quality control issues.
That being said, it's not the high prices.
People have proven they will pay more if they think they're getting quality.
If Gibson can't get their act together and stabilize quality (at a consistent and high level, mind you) then they deserve what they get when the boogie man come calling.
It will be unfortunate but they will have nobody to blame but themselves.
It's not like this is a new problem that society has sprung on them and they haven't had time to react and adjust.
People have been complaining about pricing and quality for over 20 years.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Whatever happens to Gibson, I may someday have a rare Gibson SG Std. Walnut bass. It is true that there were QC issues with Gibson products for more than 20 years.

Announced by Gibson this last Thursday (2/15/18):
Gibson Brands, Inc. announced that it has met all current obligations to the bondholders, is in the process of arranging a new credit facility to replace the bonds, and fully expects the bonds to be refinanced in the ordinary course of business.

My take:
What is considered "popular music" these days is mostly done without any guitar. Further, any guitar you do hear is likely a sample and was not played. Young people are not driven to "play guitar" like they once were, and (as such) the market for guitars is getting smaller. It will be a major challenge for companies like Fender and Gibson to maintain yearly revenues (let alone increase them) in light of this.

Thanks, it's a nice playing short scale, and I just have never been able to not like the SG body style. The Humbucking pups play well through my Ampeg setup too.

When Gibson started, they were primarily a mandolin company (not a guitar manufacturer). Maybe they can go back to that... (insert sarcasm)

As I stated earlier, this is at least partly a product of the current state of music. And with artists like Elton John and Ozzy Osbourne announcing "farewell" tours, the state of music is not likely to improve any time soon. Numerous guitar-heavy bands like Black Sabbath and Motley Crue have already completed their farewell tours. How much longer can Metallica, Iron Maiden, and Megadeth go? Can bands like Avenged Sevenfold and Stone Sour pick up the slack and drive the indistry like the bands of the past? Answer: In today's music environment, the answer is "unlikely".

Elton John decided to retire from touring because he wanted spending much spare time with his family.
