Does anyone have any experience with single coil sized P-90s? I am considering putting a set in my strat and would like to know your thoughts on them and which ones you feel are the closest to the actual thing.

I have experience running P90s but not in single coil size.

The closest thing I have experience with would be the Lindy Fralins I recently put into my Koa Top Strat.
Called Steel Pole 42, Lindy describes them as 50% single coil and 50% P90.
I describe them as great pickups for my needs.

Lindy also has a Steel Pole 43 which he describes as 25% single coil and 75% P90.

BMW,
Did you have to modify the body? It is my understanding that P90s are wider than humbuckers.

A friend used the Porter S90s and gets a great sound with 'em:

True P90's are indeed a much different size than humbuckers or Strat or Tele pickups. And the dimensions of the P90 coil are a big part of the sound.

There are "humbucker size P90s" that sound almost like real P90s. Almost, but not quite the same.

There are some Strat and Tele pickups that have a hint of P90 tone. But less close than the humbucker-size P90s -- so two steps removed from real P90s.

The single-coil size humbuckers like Duncan's Little59 and JB Jr don't sound exactly like their full-counterparts, but they actually come closer than Strat/Tele-sized P90s. The wide, broad, shallow coil of a true P90 is magic.

Your post that I quoted makes me wonder if we're misunderstanding your use of the phrase "single coil size P90s".

Do you mean real, normal, standard, traditional, original-size P90s?

If so, yes you would have to rout the body and have a custom pickguard made.

No I was curious about the normal start single coil pickups that claim to sound like P-90s. I've decided to go a different route and order a set of the Pure Vintage 59's. I would rather have the actual P-90's, therefore instead of trying to replicate them I will make it a point to buy my next guitar equipped with them. Now I just need to tell my wife I want another guitar.

That's the best plan.

It's not just the pickup form factor that matters. All those great P90 tones came from Gibsons or Gibson-ish guitars. Even real P90s in a Strat won't sound like Leslie West or Freddie King. (P90s in a Strat or Tele do sound great, just not the whole P90 experience.)

If you're averse to Gibson-ish guitars, Fender briefly offered the Stratosonic. One or two P90s, chambered mahogany body, 24.75" scale, wraptail bridge/tailpiece.

LP Jr/Spl tones in a Strat.

I have nothing against Gibsons. I own a LP traditional pro. Great playing guitar. LP Jr sounds like a plan or even an SG, but I will check out that fender too.

Just thought I should hedge a bit on the Fender Forum and mention a Gibson-flavored Strat. (I seem to vaguely recall some Gibson-ish P90 Teles too.)

But yeah, P90s in a LP, SG, LP JR/SPL, non-reverse Firebird, all sorts of great options.
