What was the first artist/act/band that made you want to play your instrument?

For me it was:

Even though they had been broken up for many years, it was the Beatles that ignited my love for rock-n-roll and the desire to play.

But it was this guy that replaced the marrow in my bones as a guitar player ... The world would never be the same.

That’s a tough question as Elvis was a big influence so I guess it would have been Scotty Moore, although I didn’t have a clear knowledge of Scotty until later. It was Elvis who I saw holding the guitar.

The Everlys definitely caught my attention though.

Bill Doggett, his record Honky Tonk was a big influence along with Elvis and Little Richard. At 5 I was overwhelmed by modern music and became a rock and roller.

At first, (mid/late 60s...) Glen Campbell, then, soon after (early 70s) Mr. Blackmore took over.

yep same here, I made the leap to Jimmy pretty early on. To put this in context (and date myself), I was that kid in high school who was wearing Led Zeppelin t-shirts while everyone else was listening to RUN-DMC, Metallica or Whitesnake.

I'd have to say The Beatles, but there were other big influences too, I was devistated when I found out that David Bowie didn't play the guitar on all of his tracks. :D

I started playing guitar several years before I started collecting records so I'm not sure if this thread actually applies to me or not.
I lived out in the boonies.
There were no radio stations, not even CBC so I didn't hear much popular music.
There was no particular artist that inspired me to learn to play.
I got that inspiration from my milk man at the age of 8.
I believe I was 9 when my mother relented from my hounding and bought me my first guitar, a 3/4 size Framus semi-arched top.
A few years later at about age 13 or so I started collecting records and then I started gravitating toward bands and sounds and styles.
I listened to pop records for about a year or a year and a half before I discovered rock.
At first it was Three Dog Night, Neil Diamond, The Byrds, The Yardbirds, Mamas & Papas, Lovin' Spoonful.
When I turned 15 I discovered rock and then it was Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, Cream, Alice Cooper.
I was into boogie for a while too.
Skynyrd, Hatchet, etc.

I think if I had to pick one guitarist that I listened to the closest and tried the hardest to figure out it would have been Ritchie Blackmore.

I didn't discover Pink Floyd until I was in my early 20s and then Dave was God for the next 30 years.
Even though Dave was God, I didn't try to learn him for at least 20 years.
I tried to be like Blackmore and also (later) like Mike Campbell.

That's actually really interesting. The milk man was a musician, or a big fan of music? Or am I missing a euphemism?

If I traced it all the way back to before I had an interest at all, I remember visiting my cousin in upstate NY. He had a "flying X" type guitar. I think it was a Kramer. And he was the person who introduced me to Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Led Zep, etc. I didn't start playing until years later.

At 13 my father brought home my first guitar. It too was a little nylon strung mahogany Framus. I too lived far out of town, and although I could order records and pick them up in about a week by my folks driving into town, sometimes it took longer to replace broken strings. No matter. I got pretty good playing less than six. :P
4 years later I then I picked up the first electric. It was a Strat. The Ventures then became a household name and one more influence.

My father used to have some records by Johnny Burnette & The Rock 'n Roll Trio and Elvis Presley (King Creole era) that I used to like but then I saw Chuck Berry on our old TV and I knew that's what I wanted to do was play guitar and sing rock 'n roll. A friend and I started learning some songs by The Ventures and then Beatlemania came along and changed everything for me.

I've told that story a few times on here so I didn't include the details.
When I was 8 my family went to a wedding.
There was a reception, naturally.
After supper people started moving the tables and chairs to the edges of the room and cleared a place in the middle.
I did not know why.
At the same time a group of men began moving lots of large black boxes around on a stage to the side.
The room was a hub of activity.
Shortly after that all settled down a band started to play.
It was the first time I ever saw a live band.
Before that night I never knew that there was a such thing as live bands.
It had previously never occurred to me to question how music was created.
The milkman, a very friendly sort, who gave me my first puppy and whom was beloved by all the children of the neighborhood, was front and center, singing and playing guitar.
I was awestruck.
We left after only a few songs because it was already well past our bedtimes.

There is a sad part of the story that I do not believe I have ever shared here.
The milkman is still alive but old age has turned him into a cantankerous sonuvvabitch.
Nobody can stand to be in his company for longer than a few minutes.
I blocked him on social media several years ago for the truly nasty pot-shots he was taking at me.
Really vile stuff.
I sent him a PM asking him to play nice in the sandbox but that just made him angry and since it was private he felt he didn't need to hold back and really let me have it.
It broke my heart to do it, given the influence he had on my life but he made it pretty clear he wasn't going to let up or let it go and that I could expect a lot more of the same, indefinitely.
All over some stupid plebiscite in my home town.
Politics, the enemy of kindness and friendship.

There were a gang of us who used to hang about during school holidays, we frequented the local park in the summer (I must have been 10-11 years old )
One evening, we heard the distant sound of music . Being curious, a few of us wandered to where it emulated from .It was a place called Ashfield labour club (A working men's pub/concert room)

As we got outside, the double doors were open to help with the heat inside (it was baking that day) and we saw a group inside up on the stage at the back of the room , they had shiny grey suits on and were playing Del Shannon's "runaway"
I was transfixed, I'd never seen anything like it , we watched them for what seemed like ages and afterwards I pestered my parents to get me a guitar
They got me a virturally unplayable cheapo acoustic , I slogged on for a while but eventually gave up, sore fingers due to the heavy strings an1/4 inch action
2 years later, got the music bug again, made a Strat copy and started playing in a local group
