We had guests over the other day and they knew I had started playing guitar. The guitar and amp were already in the living room. One friend asked whether I could play Kumbaya. I said "never heard of it" and started playing Allan Warner's Urban Blues, which came off without a hitch. I also cranked the distortion in the amp's metal model and played the thrash punk shred version of Happy Birthday and a koto-like version of Sakura Sakura. It went over pretty well, and it wasn't bad at all for a new player. It sure is nice to have a few good tunes in the repertoire. I look forward to being able to do more of them. Playing for people is conducive to happy times.

I like it when you are playing for someone and you don't think its anything special but then when you look up thier mouths are hanging open in disbelief of your amazing playing. That just makes me feel good. :D

It usually isn't even the complicated songs that wow people. Generally, if you know a decently known song, it's bound to impress someone no matter what level of difficulty. My friends are much more impressed by a simple red hot chili peppers riff or an acoustic chord progression than they are with little wing.

My grandaughter once told me that I played so good, I should be on TV. Now you know that isn't true, when your audience is only 6 years old.

Unless it's a song no one knows. In my case, if I play something a little less mainstream like Zeppelin or Hendrix (not mainstream to them, that is) then they could usually care less, no matter what the difficulty of the song. That's just from my experience though.

Being able to play a couple Beatles songs always impresses people.

Try Back in the USSR or Birthday or Come Together.

In the early 90s I tried to impress my young niece and nephew by playing some Hendrix and Stevie Ray licks. Yawns all around.

Then I played (on one string using 2 notes) the opening bass line to Vanilla Ice's "Ice Ice Baby" and they both agreed I was the most awesome guitarist ever. Go figure.

Often times, I just mess around and people say "Hey, what is that?" and I just say "Uhh, nothing... just messin' around..." they kinda' have a little "Hmmm" moment... it's a little funny.
