This may seem random, but I'm the first to admit I am a Fender fan boy.. I can say this experience was a first for me...was wondering if anyone else has had any similar experiences...

So the story goes....

I was at an open jam session at a local pub over weekend... not an uncommon thing for me to do... rock out with local fellow musicians and toss back a few cold ones... at the end of my session so guy comes up to and was like "Why are you playing metal on a Strat" I was like huh?? WTF  absolutely blew my mind away... since when was there a perquisite for a so called metal guitar? I've played all types of guitars... but a Strat feels right in my hand and its what I prefer. I have a Strat for ever job and the one I used for this gig was modded with a Duncan Pearly Gates in the bridge and two Texas special single coils...

Apparently, the guy has never heard of Iron Maiden. :P

Any guitar can have single coils or it can have humbuckers or it can have a combination of both.
Any guitar can be used for any type of music.
There are no rules.
There are only preconceived prejudices.
The only thing that is true and somewhat applies here is that some guitars do lend themselves better to a style of music or a style of play more than some others may.
In absolutely no way does that mean that's all they can do.
What a guitar can or can't do is much more dependant on the person playing it.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I’ve met quite a few uninformed individuals in pubs. I bet if he played you a song on his “metal guitar” it would all make sense.

Sure guitarists choose a multitude of options, but:

Metal groups other than Iron Maiden that have played Strats are Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Rush, Slipknot, Rainbow, Alcatraz, and the list goes on.

Let him know that if Metal takes a holiday, you’re not stuck with a one trick poney that will be a wall hanging.

Tell him that Stratocasters produced Metal Grammys and awards plus well over 100 million Metal records. That pretty much says it all.

Sounds as if it was a highly uninformed and narrow minded individual.

I often get similar comments as to why would I want to play a short scale bass?

One of my girlfriend's favorite guitars she had was a Jackson Slinky, and she does not play metal music, although does like nasty sounding distortion. The neck on those is very fast and easy to play, especially for studio use, which it was used for.

I guess a lot of this is just a visual thing more than the functionality of the instrument itself.

pics or it didn't happen. j/k

I used to hang out with a lot of players who were into metal. A LOT of them played either Jackson or Charvel for some reason. I don't know if it even makes sense but they saw Jackson as a cheaper alternative to Charvel. Like Epiphone vs. Gibson. or Squier vs, Fender.
