Yes, I didn't know that either.

But, nevertheless I can't stop loving Kombi vans

I revisited this to see what new stories had been on. Seems drinking and driving is a popular theme, something most of us have probably done and don't like to think about.

These days I have a 2008 Ford Edge and due to the downsizing of PA gear I can get our entire PA, two Mackie tops and two subs, cajon riser, one powered monitor, lights, two basses and my amp all into that car. It's a jigsaw puzzle but I can manage it so I can even see out the back window. Love not having a trailer or Stonehenge size speakers anymore.

But here's a story you all might find humorous related to hauling gear to gigs.

In the early 60's, my dad and his brother were both accordion players in their own polka band. Yes, polkas, this is Wisconsin you know, LOL. Anyway, it was the two of them, a tuba player and drummer. So my Grandpa was this incredible handyman who could fabricate anything. He made them a trailer for their gear, but here's the interesting part. It had only one wheel! The frame and shape of the trailer was a triangle, it bolted onto the bumper of the car and one wheel in back was on a swivel, so basically the whole thing made the old Buick about 25 feet long!

So they were driving to a polka gig on a Sat afternoon and the wheel broke off the trailer! When the back end hit the road the door came open and some equip fell out. But the funniest part of the story was as they braked and pulled over the large round part of the tuba that attaches/comes off past them sliding down the road. It was pretty dented and beat up but that guy was a lifelong friend of my dads and the last time I saw him a few years ago he's still playing that tuba with the top that looks like it was beat to hell.

Anyway, a one wheeled trailer? Anybody else had one of those? :D

Well, thank Goodness I haven't experienced anything alike myself, but I have a friend who was driving a minivan to a gig, the band's gear in the back. The rear door wasn't quite securely closed and flipped open in the middle of a turn... The guitarist's brand new Strat went flying in a blue dream until it fell and the G&G case was badly injured... Everyone looked at the guy in their deepest sympathy, but when he picked up the wrecked case and opened it, the guitar was entirely intact. Not a scratch or crack whatsoever.

Who doesn't love a happy end?

that's pretty cute. Definitely unique, never heard of a trailer like that or seen one here in Western Canada.

Hilarious story, Chris. I’m glad no one got hurt. That reminds me of a story I heard about a large side mounted awning on a Class A motorhome. It was ripped off from a strong wind only to shoot in front of the owners while driving on the highway. I have a polka playing accordion cousin and a former tuba nephew who are going to love your tuba/trailer
story.
As for your flying Strat, Sergio . . . I’m betting an LP wouldn’t have survived. Moral of the story is buy a car and an LP and you’re good to go. Buy a van with doors in the back - better buy a Strat. :P

As for vehicle fires with precious instruments inside, it’s best to leave it up to the experts. Even bumper components have exploded. Safety first.
