School still teaches, the teacher are held back, can't yell at kids, can't control the class because they aren't allowed to do anything anymore. Parents aren't involved until the kid complains when this or that happened at school. Don't blame the school, learning comes from both home and school, if one isn't working, the other won't help.

This is a twisted form of the word "elite" shortened to "lite", (pronounced "leet"). Hackers and the like from the 80's were the originators of these acronyms so they could have their own language of sorts. What they would do is substitute letters with other similar looking letters and numbers to form things like, "l33t", "rockorz", "lolz", "3y3", etc. This is what is referred to as Leetspeak. Now days, you find it a part of everyday speach among the younger crowd, especially the online gaming community.

The wife and I play a lot of World of WarCraft which, like any other MMORPG, is basically a glorified online chat room. Sometimes, messages need to be conveyed quickly which nessitates the use of shorthand like:

r = ready
p = pull
lol, lolz = laughing online
rofl = rolling on the floor laughing
rotflmao = rolling on the floor laughing my $@! off
inc = incomiing
ur, yer = you're or your
wit = with
bout = about
ya = yeah, yes
u = you
thos = those
IMO = in my opinion
IMHO = in my humble opinion

While the above examples do not constitute true Leetspeak, rather this is more of a shorthand that, IMO, (LOL), belongs better in a chatroom or text message than a forum.

Oh yeah, MMORPG = Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game

School disipline died the day they made corporal punishment illegal. Back in my day, simply showing up to Math class without your homework earned you three whacks with the teacher's solid oak paddle. If you were caught fighting, both of you were taken to the principal's office to receive five very painful whacks from his paddle. When you were suspended from school, you didn't get the luxury of staying home for a week. Oh no...you had to come and work with the janitor for a week taking out the trash, sweeping floors, cleaning toilets, etc.

I'm not saying you as a teacher has a right to hit my kid, but you can punish her with out hitting. The teachers imo are the "parents" when kids go to school. So as parents we need to instill that in our kids, I know I do.

What kind of a looking glass have we gone through when Standard English is considered "elitist" while so-called l33t (which itself is actually based on the word "elite") is considered standard?

Amen!!!

Furthermore, when was it determined that being elite or elitist is a bad thing? Elite, set apart, special, top notch. People use elite as synonymous with snob. That is not the case!

As stated before by my esteemed colleagues, we should not sacrifice our standards for the laziness and inexperience of others. I am not saying to be rude! Not so! We should always strive to better ourselves and not settle for mediocrity! How many medals are given to 5th, 6th, or 7th place finishers?

How would we feel if Fender settled for mediocre quality and sold substandard guitars and amps? Trust me, it would not have the following it has today nor enjoy the recognition by musicians all over the world as being the Gold Standard.

Therefore, Fender is an elitist guitar company am I for one and glad they are! Don't settle! Strive for excellence!

I had nuns at teachers! That's much worse than the paddles! I still have ruler marks on my hands, had my mouth washed out with soap, and nuns are more accurate than Green Barrets with an eraser (head shot) from across the room. I remember my desk being overturned (with me in it). And.....I even had to wear a dress at recess!

But you know.....I wouldn't trade it for anything........got me back in line, and kept me from going to the dark side of the force.........

Oh yeah........remember that nun in the Blues Brother's movie? The one that tossed Bulishi down the stairs. Well, I'm here to tell you that's all true!

The cool thing is, today the teacher might be beaten up if he/she hurts a kid! If you hit someone, expect to be hit, isn't that how karma works?

I blame the food industry for 'ruining' the youth, everything is packed with all sorts of chemicals and lots of sugar, making the kids energy level go up and down like a roller coaster all day, making them more tempered and making it harder to focus and concentrate. It's a scientific fact.
No offense to you guys but America in a nutshell is pictured as fat people eating greasy burgers and whole buckets of ice cream, while they consume oceans of coke(cola). While talking about coke, sugar is known to be even more addicting than cocaine, but how often do hear about that?

(back from a very revitalizing two week vacation in Sweden)

I saw an ad in a guitar magazine a couple of months ago, where the endorser of a guitar (thankfully not a Fender endorsee) used the word 'rad' to describe a guitar.

Who uses the word 'rad' anymore? I thought that that the usage was extremely retro (the ad wasn't retro), and more than a bit pretentious-just as I thought it was more than 20 years ago, when I first heard it.

I think that we all use shorthand, and that the 'text' generation influence is definitely creeping in-it's not necessarily a bad thing (I find that BTW can be useful sometimes), but I also find that much of it is just as pretentious as 'rad'. OMG and LOL are simply redundant words to me and are time wasters.

I don't think that forums like this are the proper venue to use text shorthand exclusively, especially since I think that texters should only use it among other texters, and most of us here aren't texting into this forum. I make time to post here, I don't do it on the fly, and I don't text.

I think that texting for the most part is just another fad. If I had a 'Crackberry' (which I don't), the VERY LAST thing I want is for someone to interrupt my private time. Ditto for cellphones. Perhaps I'm old fashioned, but I do NOT want to be 'on call' 24/7 just because it's trendy.

Just to mention, I'm surprised that 'ZZDOC' didn't expand on medical abbreviations, as there are a TON of them out there. As a retired RN (Registered Nurse, BTW), I have seen MANY an argument about the difference between 'QID' and "q6'. I've also seen some people who weren't versed in Medical terms get upset by what they perceived in a medical chart, such as in 'SOB'. That means 'shortness of breath', and is a common abbreviation.

Bottom line: know your audience. If you're not considerate enough to talk to them in ways that are easily understood, then that usually indicates a level of inconsideration by the author to your audience (in other words, you don't care what they think, or that they even understand you). And it's likely that they won't be considerate to you because of that.

I may not be the sharpest tack but I try to spell correct and when I do not it is because I hit the wrong key or it is just to dark because I have the desk lamp off and I am getting older and reading glasses are not far off. I can not stand reading gibberish style uaed in text messages. When texting I can see shortening things but no need to on here.
