Marillion -- to me -- is an extremely interesting band with music that is capable of making music as good as music can possibly get . I say "to me" because this band diverts its fans into countless very different opinions in a manner very different than, for example, Yes or Rush fans which are much more aligned in their opinions on the band and its music. Setting the stage a bit, Marillion is itself a story of stark contrasts. The 1980s-era for the band was their most commercially successful, led by a singer simply named "Fish", wielding an incredibly refreshing span of radio-friendly pop to heavy musical epics (e.g., "Misplaced Childhood", "Clutching at Straws"). in 1989, Fish left the band due to drug use and was replaced with Steve Hogarth who is still very capably leading the band to this day. The Hogarth-era is not as commercial friendly as the previous Fish-era, but equally capable of the same type of emotional and moving music that can be delicate as rain drops, and - at times - heavy as thunder (e.g., "Brave", "Marbles" proper 2-disc version). Marillion is also much bigger in Europe than in the USA.

For me, a great deal of "progressive" music is really thinly veiled "jam band" music with little musical substance. Marillion is definitely not that. Marillion is of the very rare breed that can pull off truly valid long songs without them being boringly laden with gratuitous soloing (which bores me to tears). Aside from their top-notch musicianship, Marillion is about the songwriting, emotion , and power, which - to me - makes them so great. Marillion is one of those bands it takes a while "to get", with often their most hard-core fans not loving them the first time they heard them but becoming the most musically important thing in their lives with each subsequent listening experience.

Marillion fans will often disagree on whether the Fish or Hogarth era is better ... or whether "Misplaced Childhood" is their musical pinnacle or some of the worst music that they have done. I am not a hard-core fan (and this band has its share of hard-core fans, for sure), but I am enough of a fan to put them at the same level of my favorite bands. Marillion is not a band that I have been listening to for decades, and I often regret that. Also, I have not seen them live ... I regret that too.

Where are you, Marillion fans? Are you there? Tell me about your opinions on era preference and what albums are their best, and your concert experiences. Tell me ... I really wanna know ...

Not a big Marillion fan...but I went to one of their shows back in February 1986 in Waterloo , Ontario. It was at a place called "Superskate Seven (yes..a rollerskate hall...)the room would hold about 300-400 people typically... I think there were less than 30 people in the room in total on that bitterly cold night (Thanks Judd!). But they played their whole set, and bought pizza for the "crowd" at the end of the show.

30 years ago...hmm...The show was pretty good I would say, considering the very small crowd, they played their set anyway, and didn't complain. Fish was in good form...and seemed really "into" the show regardless of the frigid night. Brings back memories of school days at University of Waterloo and my good friend Judd, who was/is a huge Marillion fan.
