I have a Strat style guitar that I designed and printed and I was wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction for pickups, pots, etc. I have never wired a guitar, so I am not sure what is what when it comes to all the options. I am also kind of new to electric guitar. But have played for over 25 years. I play mostly metal and hard rock. So I am looking for recommendations on pickups especially. What would be good pickups for playing metal in a Strat style guitar with the standard single coil pickup locations in the body?

Thanks!

The guitar

Yeah, I can solder fine. I am just unsure of what electronics I should get. I have played acoustic for 25 years on my father's old Fender Malibu. I just started playing electric guitar last year. So I don't know a whole lot about pickups, and the various pots and such. I am not sure why the image isn't working inside the "[IMG]" tags. But here is a direct link...

I understand you want a parts number and where to buy them for all the electronics and hardware ; Pickups, pots, switch, knobs.....

Cool design - what is the weight of that body?

That't super cool.

Curious about the properties of that material. Hard and stiff like acrylic or soft and flexible like PVC?

Anyway, the choice of pickups for hard rock and metal is a huge can of worms. While it's certainly possible to play heavy with single-coils (and has been done), in general most metal heads go for humbuckers.

There are single-coil sized humbuckers from a variety of manufacturers that will fit into that guard. DiMarzio recommends 500K pots for their sc sized humbuckers. Duncan recommends 250K pots for theirs. (Certain models from each manufacturer may vary.)

Duncan's website has a huge library of wiring diagrams.

------------

But since you're new to the whole subject of pickups and wiring, there's a lot of merit to the idea of a complete prewired assembly. If you get a prewired pickguard you can just unscrew/unbolt the electronics and transfer them to your pickguard. (Some places sell prewired assemblies mounted to a sheet of cardboard or similar with the intention of letting you use your existing pickguard.)

There's no setup that's perfect for everyone. And your pickups will interact with your amp -- a setup that knocks your socks off with one amp might turn your stomach with a different amp.

Wow. Now that is some amazing feedback guys. That's everything I didn't know. Thanks so much!

Miami Mike - Right around 4 lbs (1800 grams).

strayedstrater - This is just a test print. It is a very hard material called PLA. It is very brittle. I cracked a couple pieces trying to get it together before the superglue setup. If I dropped it from a 2 story building it would shatter into a billion pieces I bet. It's not bendable like the plastic used in model cars. It is more like the material old cassette cases were made from.

And thanks for the compliments guys. The inspiration for this came from Fender. I watched a video where they showed some of their work with 3d printing guitars. I found it fascinating and wanted to see what was possible with my printer. The design just evolved into a Spider-man theme. I will be assembling this as soon as the parts arrive to do some testing. After that, probably a redesign, and another test. The final print will be done in a more robust material like ABS or PETG. If anyone is interested in the files I have shared them on Thingiverse as "Spidocaster", and will continue to update the files as I make changes.

Thanks again for the great info everyone! More to come.

Oh, as for the amp I have, it is a Fender G-dec 30. I love this little guy. I can create about any effect I desire with it. I wanted to learn some Mark Knopfler stuff and it was a breeze to dial in a little wah and such to nail down a great sound. I just wish I could play as well as he does LOL.

That is so cool! I hope you bought the air filter for your printer, or use it in a well ventilated area.

That concept is nicely done. Strayedstrater is correct about the majority using humbuckers in this case. It seems to be the more prevalent with acrylic/lucite axes.

Knowing that you watched videos you may or may not have seen this one. Others are of course available, but this one does bear some relation to tone and pups albeit not an extensive demo. More on this guitar is available online. FYI:

I agree with the earlier comments about a pre-wired assembly with or without the stock pickguard. You could go the whole route and consider the addition of an S1 switch if you still decide to go with the single coil setup. That would give you more options, Indy Rocker.

Looking forward to seeing and hearing your final product. Best of luck.

Yeah, it's pretty crazy. With the neck on it, it is lighter than the Strat body with all the hardware and electronics still in it. I almost threw all the hardware off that Strat on the Spidocaster last night. My son wanted to see if he could hold it and he actually didn't have much trouble at all. He can't pickup the Ibanez Les Paul style guitar I gave him yet. But he tries :D

Here he is with the Spidocaster

That sounds like the way to go. I need to look up some info on an S1 switch. I have no idea what that is. Here, let me google that for myself lol.

I am currently modeling up an input jack plate and a rear cover plate. Both with the Spiderman theme as well. And then it's knobs and the little nub that always falls off the switch. These are going to be really cool I hope.

Will post some more photos here in a bit.
