I have a Fender Lead 1 that I believe has a DOM between 1980 and 1982.

Almost all the Lead 1 guitars I have seen are a solid color, mostly red. The one I have is red as well, but it is sort of like a sunburst patter. Red fading to almost black such that on the sides of the guitar, it is very deep red. It does not look like the other Lead 1's I have seen.

Maybe the other ones I see are like this too, but the pictures on the internet do not show the same type of coloration.

I know nothing of the history of the guitar, other than I picked it up for 100 bucks about 12 years ago.

Is there a reason why my coloration looks different than most lead 1 guitars I see online?

So I guess I was wondering, why does my Lead 1 have this color pattern, but I have not seen others similar to this, was mine refinished at some point?

It looks pretty good if it is a refinish. I have seen a few of those guitars over the years but not the color of yours. A lucky find.

1979 - 1981 Black and Wine transparent red (Note: This does not say black or red)

1981 - 1982 Cherry Sunburst (which I believe may or may not have a brighter inner colour like a yellow or orange appearance)

1982 - replaced by Fender Japan Squires

Could either Black and Wine or Cherry Sunburst relate to your axe? Maybe, some here in the Forums have those colours and can verify it.

Perhaps, it is a transitional Fender moving from or to USA to or from Japan? circa ‘82. This is doubtful since the neck says USA; however, Lead series are associated with Japan’s Squires and, unless the body is stamped USA, that part of the guitar could, although unlikely, have a history of change.

Hard to say. After a thorough search I didn’t see any photos like yours. Also, an ‘82 Black Cherry Burst Lead I (if that be the case) was recently listed on EBay, but it was gone before I discovered it. Whetever yours is, it doesn’t seem that common.

More information including my earlier dating/colour scheme above on Fender’s Lead series and artists that used one can be found here:

Keep us posted if you find an answer, Hobbyist. Thanks, for the post. Cool guitar.

The "standard" color options for Leads in the beginning of the eighties were Black (506); Cherry Sunburst (530); Sienna Sunburst (531) and Arctic White (580).
None of those matches this guitar...
And I don't remember any other US red burst option which would be even close - nothing in the early eighties Custom Color options, either. Crimson Burst, Midnight Wine Burst, Antique Burst all were introduced later, AFAIK.

One possibility could be that a Japanese Lead body in GRB (Gunmetal Red Burst) would have gotten a US neck somewhere along the time before 1980Fender1960 bought the guitar. That's just a wild guess, but would match that body color and the timeline.
Of course, one-off custom colors have been known to pop up rarely in Fender history.
And there's the refinished-option (which would be a paint job very well done).
Neck pocket markings could support or deny these theories...
