We all have differing abilities when it come to auditory matters, when folks say "I don't hear any differences" in the mahogany vs. rosewood, etc. posts, doesn't mean there are no differences, just that they are subtle and often defined by the overtones in the higher frequencies.

I'm sure this test is less than scientific still I found it interesting.

I can't hear the very bottom. Nothing until 55 Hz then up 5759 Hz.

How did you do?

My results using computer speakers with a sub in my at work office, I started hearing it at 46Hz and my speakers stopped hearing it at 9739Hz,( I did not say I could not hear any frequency's above 9739Hz, I think my speakers in my office can not reproduce any higher than that) , now with that said a lot has to do with the speakers you are listening through, most speakers do not reach as low as 20 Hz and many lower quality speakers do not reach as high as 20Khz. A lot have to do with what speakers you are listening to. To do this test with clinical results you would need a calibrated set of headphones in a very quite room. But it was fun and interesting anyway

Also, for the record, I used cheap headphones. I agree with you and it was interesting.

Around 30 Hz it sounds like a helicopter going over the house (routine for me...I live near an emergency hospital...)

I could "hear20 Hz" no probs...490Hz getting super uncomfortable...does this mean I should switch to bass?

I suddenly have a hankering for a Vintage Jazz bass..

Thanks for posting Mike. I could hear most of it in the middle.

This is interesting, Mike. I used some nice audio-technica headphones and was able to hear all the way down to 20Hz and stopped hearing at around 10,000Hz. I'm not sure what that means, as far as my hearing goes, though. Thanks Mike.

I have a pair of Bose noise cancelling headphones, but the battery is dead and I don’t have a new one at the moment. So I tried it with my mid-range Sony headphones (model MDR-XD100). I could hear from the very beginning of the clip (20hz) up to 13,000hz. Just as it hits 13,000 my ear totally stops hearing the tone. Frequency response is supposed to be 12~22,000 for these headphones so I guess it’s my ears. :(

“The range of hearing for a healthy young person is 20 to 20,000 hertz. The hearing range of humans gets worse with age. People lose the ability to hear sounds of high frequency as they get older. The highest frequency that a normal middle-aged adult can hear is only 12-14 kilohertz.”

Well that explains a lot. Thanks for the info.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Yes.
Considering typical rock n roll musicians historically have nothing above 6K or below 30.
I was expecting it to be better though.
I embraced hearing protection early in life but I always chose protection that was minimal for the situation (except at work) so as to not loose too much detail or nuance.
About 15 years ago an employer put me through audiometric testing and back then I was good for 20 - 16,000.
Obviously some degradation since then.
I think age plays a role in this too.

Beethoven went deaf in the latter part of his life, but he continued composing because he could still "hear" the music in his head...

Thanks, for this thread, Mike. I can rest easy for awhile now. As some of you know, I’ve been setting up a lot of audio gear this week and my ears were getting a workout with the drums, guitars, and surround sound to be brief.

I ran across some old frequency sweep media I had and my hearing appeared worse suddenly which may be age related. So I did my frequency test for the first time in years. I had pretty good hearing the last try about 10 years ago and I was fortunate to reach between a stellar 16 and 17khz when I hit 60 yrs. of age. My test last week was found to be somewhere around 7khz and. needless to say, I was taken aback and walked around like a sad puppy for a day.

Your test comes (and others on YouTube for verification) got me to where I could hear above 10khz and often 12khz, but that was reaching it and inconsistent. I also heard and felt 20Hz. Those low tones were definitely ingrained in me from hearing them constantly when I worked.

The cans I wore are the same ones I use when mixing and they make a difference. I too have Bose noise cancelling headphones, but the ones I got from Focusrite seem to do the job without colouration or frequency loss for these tests.

So, thanks for giving me a better score. :D
