Please help me to make a decision. A brand New 2017 Classic Player or a pretty much mint 97 Strat Plus with gold Lace pickups. Both guitars are the same price. I play reggae and blues. Mainly interested in build quality / hardware quality differences.

Did you talk about the Classic Player 60 Stratocaster ?

https://shop.fender.com/en-US/electric- ... 14110.html

MIM ?
With 12 inches neck radius :(

I'll go for the 97 Strat Plus all the way if it is original.
Friend of mine have one. It is one of the greatest sounding modern guitar I heard.
He don't want to sell...

I've never played a Strat Plus but I owned a Tele Plus Deluxe.
Some people really, really like the sound of Lace Sensors.
Other people really dislike them.
A lot.
I fall into the latter category.
I couldn't get rid of that Tele quick enough.
Still, like I said, some people really go for that sort of thing.

I personally think the best idea here would be to find out first which camp you're in before you spend your money because until you know ... it's a gamble.
On the other hand, if it turns out you are like me and you still have a little budget left over you could always swap those pups out.
In lots of ways I wish I had kept that Tele.
It had some cool features you don't normally find on a Tele.
With a pup swap I prolly would have loved it.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

A regular MIM with sort-of-vintage features (mind you, not a bad choice by itself) vs a model which at its build time was among the higher end Fender models...
I'd choose the Plus - with a check for legit/original/condition.

On Lace Sensors... Clapton has used those for quite a long time. Jeff Beck. Buddy Guy. No complaints on their sounds... On the Tele side, from Jonny Geenwood to Francis Rossi. So, all I'm saying is, it's the player, not the equipment.

Welcome to the Forum, bennybelle.

I agree with the others here in that your pick is a personal one. I returned a beautiful second hand Strat that earlier saw regular use in a church, fit well, sounded good, played well, weighed less than the one I have now, was priced right, and looked good (or so I thought). It was only after I had it for a few weeks that the colour which I thought would grow on me didn’t. That’s all it took for an exchange for the new one. Losing the weight advantage was a distinct trade-off, and, perhaps, some subtle differences which are hard to recall since I found lots of good in both. The first had a rosewood neck and a small bit of darker sound, the second had maple and a brighter sound. Maple or rosewood, darker or brighter is a personal choice to be sure, and I like both, but prefer to start with brighter and mix in some darkness rather than the other way around. Some may prefer the opposite. Other than that and the colour difference they were pretty much the same.

As for the pups I know the difference and like the sound of a great many having experience with original 62’s and hearing others. But, for my purpose of recording the noiseless N3s, even with their differences, do fine for the job at hand. I’ve even managed to get them to replicate some other pups. The N4s, which I have yet to try, and others fill the plate depending on your appetite. My hunger will probably see other pups too, and for live performance, which is mostly left behind me, different pups would certainly be a consideration.

All things considered, the bottom line is whichever axe you choose, I‘d go with the one you feel looks good on you. Nothing worse than liking what you have and waking up the next morning wondering if you still like it. That will happen when you get GAS as it’s like loving your car until one you haven’t seen pulls up beside you. There are tons of guitars that sound sweet, but what looks good to some looks bone ugly to me. Willie Nelson’s Trigger is an exception. :P Of course, everyone has seen the gorgeous guitar on the rack only to be taken in the hands with a playback that sounds like crap.

My thought is be happy with what you can’t change (and that includes playability and build) and consider what you can change. If you can get it all. Bonus!

Best in your choice.

Hoo, that's a great point, but I want to add something: The way a player *thinks* his ax looks when he's playing it may not be 100% correct compared to how it comes across on stage, in the context of a full band and in the context of whatever other players are up there too. For instance, I've got a PB in the Clapton colors whose "meh" appearance up close or even in a mirror always grated on me -- until I saw a long-distance wide shot of a band I was using it with that day and I realized, whoa, that thing looks pretty damn good under the lights. So now if I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on a new bass, first I try to locate *stage* pics of the same instrument in the same color, in another player's hands.

Great observation, Craig. Go with the clear acrylic. Just kidding. :P
I guess when choosing your axe you could go funky with the colour and dress basic or go basic with the colour and dress funky or you could go funky both ways, but you might get some weird looks. Then again Earth, Wind and Fire can get away with it and I like them. :D

Haha. Look is definitely important. Found so many guitars for the right price and right specs but an ugly colour. Guess its all subjective though. Thanks everyone for the advice. In the end i went for the 97 strat plus... ill try to post a picture

You’re welcome, bennybelle. Many times the gang in this Forum have been helpful to me and others, and if we’ve helped at all then things are still rockin’. 8)
Looking forward to seeing that ‘97 Strat Plus and reading your shared experience. Grab that mojo, and have great times. :D
