I went to my local guitar shop today. The owner told me that Fender would soon be selling their entire line of gear at Best Buy stores nationwide. Is this true?

A Geek squad VW pulls up out front your house and the person gets out and says I am here to tune your gee tar! That will be 39.95

I don't believe Fender, or any other big-name guitar company, will have their entire line at a BB, but you never know. But with that said, BB is going the way of Target, Walmart, Sam's, BJ's, Costco, etc. in having entry level musical equipment. Hell, I ran up to Target the other day cause I needed a capo. That market is huge, particularly with all the little kids and wannabes who want to pick up and try to play a real guitar at low prices after mastering their Guitar Hero and Rock Band games. (On a side note, I shoot in the low 50s on the Tiger Woods game, maybe I should play on the PGA tour.)

If I was to buy a guitar from BB and got the service plan, would I have to bring it in for a set-up, or would the Geek Squad come out to my house?

That would be horrible though. Its like not to many years ago you needed something for your house you went to the local hardware store and every neighborhood had a few. Now there all gone and you havre to got to the big box Depot or Lowes no personal sevice.

Brad, are you saying no to the Fender name being in BB, or are you saying no to the entire line of Fender in BB?

The Fender name is in BB -- they carry our Starcaster® line! (EDITED: mis-statement removed.)

I found this article on a Chicago area on-line newspaper. Sorry, pictures don't show up.

Move over Guitar Center, and look out Sam Ash. Best Buy is getting into the music store business.

Consumer electronics retailer Best Buy is testing the musical instrument waters at two Chicago-area stores and enlisting some big-name talent for the launch.

Blues legend and Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame inductee Buddy Guy will perform at Best Buy's Downers Grove store at noon Saturday, and Grammy winner Jim Peterik will perform at Best Buy's Aurora store at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Grammy winner Jim Peterik, of the bands Survivor and Ides of March, will perform at Best Buy's Aurora store at 2 p.m. Sunday. Here he shows off some of his 140 guitars in his home studio in 2006.

Bad Idea! Fender doesn't belong in any store other than a music store. It just cheapens Fenders image. Just my two cents...

Just found this.
http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5jk40 ... AD926M57O0

Some tidbits.

The nation's largest consumer electronics retailer will announce Tuesday that it plans to open as many as 85 of the music centers inside its stores by the end of the year and could add even more locations in the future, executives told The Associated Press.

Each site will use about 2,500 square feet of retail space and include roughly 1,000 different products with well-known brand names such as Fender, Gibson, Drum Workshop and Roland.

Best Buy's selection will include everything from accessories — picks, sheet music and cases — to high-end basses, guitars, keyboards and DJ equipment. Instruments will be housed in separate rooms and the company also plans to offer group music lessons.

Acoustic guitars will sell between $89.99 and $3,200 and drum kits will retail for as much as $5,000.

Well, it takes a REAL man to admit he's dead wrong, and ... I'm a real man!! :-) I'm red in the face as I gotta confess, the info above is complete news to me as well -- should have paid attention that little tingling in my head that told me I might want to doublecheck some facts here before posting authoritatively on the matter. D'OH!!! I've gone back and edited/removed my mis-statements above as well.

Yeah.....I fell the same way too. Makes it seem more like a toy or video game. It would feel like going to target and seeing those very cheap (no quality) guitars, and not wanting to go near them.

Just as long as I don't go to my local supermarket for a quart of milk, and see a strat displayed nearby, next to the cookies and crackers. At that point I'd probably just give up buying any more guitars.
