Now records have made a comeback and even cassettes seem to find a niche again, to some degree. Everything old is new again, I suppose. Fashions are like that, quite frequently.
You are so right, Paul. The market goes up and down, and so do the hemlines of dresses, and I suppose the width of ties.

With electronics many things come and go such as features, and what was a given is either no longer available at a price point or it is marketed at a higher cost. Compare turntables and tape decks today with earlier ones.

The other thing is that new isn’t always better as first perceived. True that some characteristics blow the old one out of the water (maybe), but, all too often, they sell us the potential. and not the mature form. The mature form may never be reached as another immature goodie is just around the corner ready to start us on another journey of discovery and goodbyes.

Metal tapes could perform, but they could also ruin your tape heads under certain formulas and conditions. Along comes CDs that pretty much killed tape, and audible artifacts appeared and, even today, standards were not met. Decoding and encoding such as digital to digital, analog to digital, and a host of other considerations entered the playing field. 90 minutes CDs? Add to that, once the tapedeck was shown the door, those early cherished CDs began to show up as rust. Some are out there that have yet to show their ugly face amongst the counterfeit ones (many from a particular country in Europe). If you haven’t heard an audiophile CD, you are missing out. Some of those discount multi-generation analog to digital discs will reveal their true worth.

Oh, yeah. If you’ve ever had the fun picking out a rogue 8 track or cassette tape from your pinch wheels and capstans, try taking a stuck CD out of your player. For me, the fun is pouting because another top cover on a CD case has either cracked or the hinge tab has broken.
Of course the USB or other digital card can come to the rescue; however, it can be argued about the longevity over time and there is a risk that the data could get lost or corrupted.

I was recently given a Bluetooth wireless headset. It takes a micro SD card. I wouldn’t want to insert a CD or cassette into those cans. But, I can plug into a cassette deck or CD player as well. :P
Hey! It’s all good and all bad. Choose your poison. And we haven’t even included digital audio tape.

You know, I didn't even bother to get a CD player until 1992, and that came with a boombox that I had to replace my old one with. Eventually, I also had to replace my home stereo system, which was one of those all in one shelf systems, but it didn't have a CD player, so I went all out and got components, including a 5 disc CD changer, which caused me to jump in the CD buying game. I also used to be a member of that Columbia House thing, where you'd get 10 CDs for a penny, or some crap like that, but I did get pretty good deals with that. I got my entire Led Zeppelin and Doors catalog through that, as well as a few other things that I liked. They also would send you things based on your music tastes, which you could keep or send back, and were interesting things that I kept.

I remember belonging to that club. At first I got several so called free discs, and then if I bought x amount I could pick a free one out of a supplied list. That turned out to be a pretty good deal if you didn’t have an extensive library. However, if you did, you’d find yourself looking at a short list with little or nothing to choose from. I remember them offering for you to pick from a later list. Sometimes, that was the same one you got earlier. At other times, I would panic because I had to send confirmation that I didn’t want a delivery, and shift work or a late Columbia/Postal notification made that a last minute difficulty.
But, like you Paul, it did add to my collection. :D

It did good for awhile, but then I needed money for music gear, like amps and basses, so that took away that, as far as extra cash went, so after that I just did what ever I could at one of the local record shops, every once in awhile. At least I did manage to build quite a collection from it while I had it going.
