I just joined the forum after buying my first real Stratocaster. I grew up playing a no name plywood strat but when I got serious about playing it was all Les Pauls, Mosrites, and Fender Jaguar. I knew my hands preferred the shorter scale ones, but I needed a Stratocaste in my collection and would enjoy playing a whole new type of guitar.

I narrowed down my choices to the new Professional Stratocaster, but for the same price I could get a Ventures Strat, AV65 or a Custom Shop 60 relic. Only the 60's relic would be bought used to so I thought it was the best choice. It's black with a matching headstock, similar to Lennon's strat, although Bob Dylan also played a similar one with Eric Clapton live. I like the look with a matching headstock, not Fender classic, but classy nonetheless.

It sounds good, like a Start but I need to put my preferred set of strings and learn about setting up a Stratocaster to get the best out of it so I'm not judging it yet. I learned from experience a great guitar can feel like crap with the wrong strings. I'll set it up this weekend and find my sound with it hopefully. So far it sounds quite good but as mentioned, I think it can feel a bit better to play still

Anybody else have these guitars? Were the earlier models more vintage accurate then the later ones? How do people like the Custom Shop 60 pickups, with the bevelled pole pieces and how high do you have these pickups? I usually have all my pickups quite close to the strings, but I've read this is not the Strat way.

Welcome to the Forums. Hydra19. Nice grab on the Custom Shop 1960 Relic. Looks good and it should be a great addition to your other nice collection.

I do not have that model, but I know you will enjoy yours. My Amn. Dlx was good to go out of the box, but I am glad that you realize a tweak with setup will improve things to make it fit your playing style and preference. One of the finer things about the Strat is that they are very adaptable for tweaking. The first thing I did was go from 9 to 10 guage strings. I’ve stayed with them. Some, after enlarging nut slots, have gone to higher (like 11s, 12s, or 13s) or lower guage such as 8s. However, 9s are now standard and are fine. I’m not fond of Fender bullets’ tone and generally use GHS Boomers and/or D’Addarios XL, although I have tried and considered others as well. YMMV A good setup makes a difference as it fits your needs and not necessarily someone else’s.

There are, as you know, many articles about setting up a Strat. I thought the following may be of interest. Although not specific, the gist is there from a reputable source.

Three (of many) useful videos:

The next video gives you an idea what it takes to make the Masterbuilt Strats period correct as John Cruz did it. Generally, to answer the question, “Is the later or earlier Strat version of each repro model more true to the original”? Basically, yes and no. A variety of things can come into play - parts availability, improvements or not, perhaps an adoption of an earlier design by the Custom Shop, cost, and other things. For your purpose, I can’t say for sure as it will be a one on one comparison both with your axe and another along with an original. Even the finish will need to be taken into account. Having one built to one’s specifications, of course, will give some assurance. Others here may chime in with more specific experience in your Strat.

More similar or detailed info is available from Fender, YouTube, and elsewhere such as this Forum.

I hope the above will get you started in the right direction.

Pretty cool. 8) I especially like the matching headstock.
