I seem to be missing something. When I search for rock music on I-Tunes, almost the only thing I see is oldies music, like Led Zeppelin and the other music from the 60s through about the early 80s.

Surely there is plenty of good music being made today. There have to be more musicians, and all of the technology is better.

Where is the good music that is rock-like? Is there a new genre name I should be searching with? It doesn't have to be nostalgic, all I'm looking for is music that is lively, energetic, and performed with vivacity and enthusiasm. Of course, it has to sound good too.

I try sampling the pop/rock music at places like Borders books, where you can wander around for hours listening to samples of the various CDs that are on sale. Can't seem to find much that I like.

I did have one sensational find in the "California Guitar Trio", which is an instrumental acoustic guitar group that is really, really good. Highly recommended!!!

well it depends on what your looking for, there are some newer bands like what you saying, but they will be way more "hardcore" and "emo" and even then I only like a select few from most of the bands I know of...

a lot of the "rock music" made today is in my op bunch of people playing 7 string guitar with the heaviest distortion possible and just making noise. then the singer is making sonds like a dieing bird. there are a few good rock bands know a days like nickelback and breaking benjamin.

Go to "Browse," choose Music, then choose Rock.

You then have a whole list of sub-genres.

Try it with Pop, also.

Country & Blues seems to be the new "Rock".

There are still plenty of good acts out there. It seems that most are just generic rock because consumers will simply buy anything. If they're making money, why do anything different. There ares still plenty of bands doing lots of interesting things. To name a few:

-Radiohead (pick up Kid A or In Rainbows. Also, listen to songs like Paranoid Android, 2+2=5, Everything in its Right Place, or The National Anthem)

-Muse (Their albums range from the orchestral influenced Absolution to the all out rock Origin of Symmetry to the modern, progressive Black Holes and Revelations. Listen to songs like Knights of Cydonia, Butterflies and Hurricanes, Bliss, New Born, and Stockholm Syndrome)

-Incubus (Pick up the album "A Crow Left of the Murder" It ranges from the all out rock of Beware! Criminal to the haunting piano riffs of Here in My Room. Their other albums are great as well, I simply thing ACLOTM is a good starting point.)

Others: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Audioslave, Rage Against the Machine, Buckethead, Weezer, The Foo Fighters, Daft Punk, Wolfmother.... the list goes on and on

I think that the rise of online music is revolutionizing the industry in that a band doesn't need to fit into a radio-friendly niche to be recognized. This also means that a lot of talented bands are staying with smaller labels since the promotion side of things isn't as big a deal. As far rock goes, these are some of my more recently released favorites:

Wilco "Sky Blue Sky" - This is on the classic rock / countryish side of rock. Great song writing and guitar playing throughout.

Radiohead "In Rainbows" - So this doesn't sound like traditional rock, but it's really good and has some great guitar work.

Against Me! "New Wave" - If by rock you mean loud and in-your-face, this is it. Kind of like Bad Religion.

The New Pornographers "Twin Cinema" - This is upbeat and energetic and full of good musical ideas.

John Mayer "Where the Light Is" - A live album with a lot of great blues guitar playing. Kind of sounds like SRV if he had written pop songs.

Christ, I must be getting old, because a lot of this new stuff that's coming out today sounds a lot alike. Most of these new bands even look alike with their Emo haircuts and inability to play the guitar.Give me classic rock and hair Metal anyday of the week. Today's so called rock music sucks!

Yep, and the music you listen to, the generation before you said the same thing about.

I wrote a huge blog on this whole musical decline thingy, but I'll save you all from reading it.

Luckily, there are still some people keeping things alive. Some bands I would recommend if you're looking for a new rock sound: Kings Of Leon, The Raconteurs (Jack White), The Black Keys.

I like a lot of new music that blends genres, like the Chili Peppers and Mayer, but in terms of full on rock bands, the three I mentioned earlier in this post seem to be keeping it up for me.

I agree. There is something wrong when a "classic rock" station plays Poison's "Every Rose Has It's Thorn" or Ratt's "Way Cool Junior." That's not "classic rock" to me. I could use a listen at newer bands and different, newer genres. It's been a while since I've heard, and liked, something brand new (except Primus). But I will say that all the NuMetal bands that made it big in the 90's, including Korn, sounded like angry kids trying to be Faith No More.

C'mon, FNM wish they could be as heavy as Korn :)

FM radio to me has gotten SO predictable and formulaic since the mid-1990's. Music on TV now is dead to me if not dying.

FM radio has been dominated by a couple of mega-corporations since FCC deregulation, and they only seem to play what they either think or want people to hear. I don't particularly want to 'subscribe' to a Satellite service where I have to pick and choose from a 'genre', and I don't want to go surfing the 'Net for the same thing either.

I miss my days of listening to the local College FM radio station, that had a incredibly diverse and eclectic range and selection of new and old music, and no particular format. Maybe someone reading this is lucky to live near one of these stations, especially since they only have a effective range of about 20 or 30 miles (if you're lucky).

To be honest, FM has been predictable since forever, the only ones that aren't/weren't are the morning shows/afternoon shows, even those got predictable.

Sattelite is a good way for people to listen to what they want. Most people listen to certain genres, and they can pre program their radio to what they want to hear, like regular radio in the car...but you have to pay for service.

If you live close by to them, college radio is alive and well, but the music seems to mimic regular FM.

Rock is always in Flux. You get used to it sounding one way then it changes and you get a new sub category of it. I feel confident that there will be one or two groups come ou in the next few months that wll be the Beatles or Zeppelin of the generation. Remember that Chuck Berry and Elvis were some of the original rock stars. The Genre changes with each new generation 20 years from now it will be classic rock from the 00s
