“The music producer is in charge of either writing the material or if he didn’t write it, he’s in charge of organizing it and making it sound like a cohesive song. He calls all the shots on what’s played, and when it’s played, and how it’s played, and the sounds that are used, or the vocals that are recorded if they’re correct or not. The producer is in charge of everything.”

Cool idea for a poll. I think more people should know who Max Martin is.

You're right. I think many people don't even think about the music producers.

"I didn't even know what a producer did, I spent two years–day and night–in that studio trying to learn what the hell was going on." – Max Martin, 19 March 2001

Well he certainly figured that gig out:

RE: Billboard “Hot 100” chart:

“Martin is the songwriter with third most number one singles on the chart, behind only Paul McCartney (32) and John Lennon (26). As a producer he holds the record for second-most number one singles on the chart with 20 behind only George Martin (23).”

I said 'other'.
Some guy in Florida ... name of Bennett ... I think.

Honestly, I've never paid much attention to who produces what.
I guess maybe I should.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I wish I could vote but I don't want my ignorance to skew the tally. This is a thought-provoking topic and I'm interested in the results. Nice one, Mike.

I know it says "current", but I think it was more challenging to have great sounding albums back in the late 1960s and the 1970s. What George Martin did with the Beatles was ridiculously good -- absolutely nothing sounded as good as the Beatles from a production sound point coming out of the 1960s. Led Zeppelin had excellent production from "IV" on (except for "Houses of the Holy" which always sounded thin to my ears). Entering into their 1970s eras, Yes always had particularly good production as did Pink Floyd. The Who's "Who Are You" (1976) was a particular standout. Nearly no hard rock band of the 1970s had good production (thank God for live albums which were actually a combination of live and studio -- Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest, Blue Oyster Cult, UFO, Pat Travers, Scorpions, et al). The Ted Templeman-era Van Halen albums were particularly well produced covering up for the fact that David Lee Roth who is very talented but could not actually sing. Rush sounded good from "Fly By Night" (their second album and first with Neal Peart) on. Black Sabbath did not sound really good until the "Sabotage" album. Heading into the 1980s, the problem became "over production" -- those crazy drums and over-done keyboard effects made a lot of good 1980s music unlistenable (remember "Flash" by Jeff Beck???). A few exceptions to this were the Fixx, Tears for Fears, and Men At Work who still have very listenable and excellent sounding 1980s music. Rush is another standout with 1980s music that still sounds good even though they had a heavy keyboard leaning. Grunge helped tone down the "over done" 1980s production cues which made the transition into the 1990s a very welcomed change -- bands like Blind Melon, Sponge, the Gin Blossoms, and Nirvana had production that focused much more on the instrumentation instead of overall whiz-bang effects. Extreme's "III Sides To Every Story" is a production standout. Then ... in 2002 ... the music industry started the downward spiral of death ... Gary Clark Jr is a rare exception in this current era.

David Foster IS another great producer. Steve Berkowitz is another with a few Grammys.

Glyn Johns is still active and would be my vote for best producer of all time. When I started paying attention to things like producer's credits, it was amazing how many of my favorite albums had Johns as the producer.

(sorry I missed the poll; my vote probably would have been a tie between T-Bone Burnett and Jeff Lynne)
