Are they any good or just cheap knock offs?
They ceratinly look the part, havent played one because no one seems to stock them in Dublin, Ireland.

I've had an Electromatic Hollowbody as my "office guitar" for several years and it is a fantastic instrument ... love it!

I've played a few Electromatics... there was a hollowbody I liked (I don't remember the model), and there was a Pro Jet that I liked, but the neck was a little big for my taste.

I think they are superb, both the hollow and solid bodies. I just don't care for thumbnail fret markers. I got lost easily when playing one in a low lit room. And I have some trepidations about floating bridges.

would people categorize the electromatics as squires or mexicans?

You can't really compare them. Gretsch doesn't have an "entry" line. The cheapest Electromatic they offer is the Junior Jet, for $280. The go all the way into the thousands with models like the White Falcon or the Tennessean.

They range from Mexican Fender quality to Custom Shop quality.

50 years ago, in the process of 'electrifying' a Harmony acoustic with some DeArmond pickups, I found my way to the old Gretsch factory down on the waterfront in Williamsburgh, Brooklyn. That building, a piece of music history, still stands.

One of my former bandmates play a "Tennesean" for years.

What I'd like to know is: Where is their high end stuff being built now, and by whom??

Doc

That particular model is made in China

I don't want to hijack this thread but I have been looking at a Gretsch 5120 for a while now. Any input on those?

I believe the highest end stuff is made at the Corona factory in the good old USA.

The next highest end stuff is made by Terada (and possibly Dyna) factories in Japan. See

http://www.gretschguitars.com/terada

The least expensive stuff is made in Korea, I believe, but I've not heard a specific maker, Cort maybe?

I've read that Tokai makes the MIJ "for Japan" Fenders, while Dyna makes the MIJ "for export from Japan" Fenders.

At any rate I found a MIC Special Jet on sleazebay for $235, and it plays just fine, w/US-made DeArmond pickups.
