The guitar storage question is one that I should know the answer to by now, but I've never given it much mind until recently. I want to make sure I'm taking care of my nitro finishes (two vintage Guilds and a brand spankin new Gibby) + all of my necks. I live in a smallish apartment with ceiling heating/ac vents left, right, and center, and my room has an exterior wall. Nowhere in the open in my room is more than a few feet from either ceiling vent, however the closet presumably would provide a nice little barrier, albeit while keeping them out of site and harder to get to.

Would my closet be my best bet, or would ceiling vents be of little consequence so long as the guitars are on stands on the floor rather than hanging directly adjacent to them?

This is not an exhaustive list but here are a few things you might want to consider.

The humidity/dryness where you are.
If it is reasonably consistent and between 30% and 40% you should be OK leaving them out long term.
Provided they are not subjected to big fluctuations in temperature, that is.

The kind of material that contacts the headstock on your stand or hanger.
Some materials, like foam or surgical tubing, that are used on stands and hangers can cause flaws to develop in the finish at the point of contact if left for a long time.

The air-tightness of your case.
Obviously, the more air-tight the better for control of humidity inside the case.

The way the case supports the guitar.
Contact points in a case can have similar effects as hangers when stored for long periods.

The way the case is stored, ie: flat or standing upright.
Affects the points of contact and may also place pressure on the neck joint under some circumstances.

Any air movement on your instruments, whether warm or cool, will have a drying affect.

Prolonged exposure to bright, hot light can adversely affect the finish.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Humidity is pretty wacky because new england; i try to keep the thermostat set at 68 and on, so if it dips below that it'll kick on until it gets back up.

Closet seems fairly consistently dry, at least as far as I can feel.

I have lived in California (low humidity), Scottsdale (no humidity), Pittsburgh (humid), and Austin (humid), and I have had never had any problems. However, now that I am in Colorado Springs, I have had major humidity issues. Usually it is low humidity here in Colo Springs, but this summer has been quite humid. I now keep a humidifier in my office (where the guitars are) set at 35%. I have guitars out, on hangers, and in cases, and all of them seem okay.
