Just my two cents.

I played in a pop/rock band a few years back and found that my ears were ringing quite badly after rehearsals etc. I bought a set of custom molded in-ear monitors (that reduce external sounds and allowed me to monitor my keyboard) and another set of custom earplugs that contain a filter. This allows some frequencies in and filters out others. These are very good when I am practicing piano a lot and my ears are feeling a bit sensitive. They allow the sound to be fairly neutral but eliminate a fair bit of the volume.

The problem I found with standard, foam, etc., earplugs are that the sound becomes very muffled and mushy - at least in my experience and I did not feel as connected to the band while playing.

The custom earplugs are not cheap and are a hassle to get fitted but they are worth it.
