I stumbled upon the Fender STARCASTER today at our local Target store.

I needed to ask if anyone has tried one of these out? My nephew is interested in learning how to play guitar... I thought for the price of $180.00 (and it includes a small Fender amp) it might be a good way to start him out.

Any thoughts on this particular guitar?

well, its a beginner guitar, I believe it to be of lower quality than a Squier, which you could get a starter pack for also for about $210... a total of 30 more dollars

Thanks...I just checked out your ORIGINAL post. Looks like not one seems to like it... I thought perhaps for a beginner it might be worth the try to bust his fingers in and at least get him started.

I don't think I'd feel good about buying a guitar at that type of store. I bought bought my grandson a guitar (9 years old) for Christmas. I felt good about that, because it was made by Ibanez. It's a smaller guitar meant for little kids with small hands (not standard size). It actually sounds pretty good, for what it is. Fender also makes a similar product called a Mini-Strat, which I thought was a better product (maybe I'm biased towards Fender). http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/ ... sku=510421

He had his heart set on the Ibanez, which he saw at a local music store, so that's the one that I bought.

i've seen the starcaster at target and bj's(the sams club of target) and they are a decent price. just last week before i went into my guitar lesson i found one of those new in a beautiful stone cherry color and it played much better then my squier. i would go for it especially for a beginner.

[quote="Barry Pullis"]I stumbled upon the Fender STARCASTER today at our local Target store.

'Starcaster' is a name which Fender has resurrected from its copyrighted brands vault. I've seen that guitar at Cosco. You know well that the bottom line for a beginner is the playability. We addressed this once before for someone who was just getting into the hobby and was asking the same question..."What to buy?"

You are sophisticated enough to assess this product as to its suitability as a learning tool because you know the potential user. What you don't have, with respect to vendor, is accountability for product and the maintenance thereof.

I would take the lead on the recommendation to purchase from a guitar dealer.

I actually had the experience of hauling one of these mini-Strats off the wall in a GC and putting it into the hands of a professional who was looking for something to start his nine year old daughter with. He was quite appreciative of the find. He never knew it existed.

Good luck.

Doc

Everyone... though this thread was posted once before, and I neglected to review them, I appreciate all the great feedback.

Being an experienced guitar player myself, I remember my first guitar and it was crap, but I was able to learn my basics from it.

This Fender Starcaster just looks much better than what I had started with and I want to get my nephew started in the right direction... without spending too much money in case he decides not to be dedicated to the learning of the instrument.

I am not able to try it out myself since it is in a box with an amp. Perhaps my local dealer has them, and I will go and play it myself, before making the purchase.

Thanks again!

Costco, often as not, has one on display to audition when they offer these for sale. Also give a thought to the other suggestions....the Strat-mini, and an inexpensive Squier.

Not a bad way to start especially since it's for your nephew. If he gets serious about it he will need to upgrade in less than a year though. Heck I started out on a MAJOR piece of crap that I bought for $25 at a swap meet. More knobs and switches than the space shuttle (many of which didn't do anything as far as I could tell), flat frets in a couple of places. But we all have to start somewhere.

Yeah, starcasters aren't to bad, but I like the old ones with the triangular headstock more. The new ones have a giant CBS strat headstock that doesn't even say Fender on it anywhere. I don't know how they compare to Squires, though.

My wife got our son a "last years model" Starcaster with amp at Sam's Club for $120. The good part is that it sounds OK and holds a good tune.

The frets along the bottom edge of the neck are rough and feel unfinished. I have smoothed them up some. He also broke off the wammy bar. It is an OK beginner guitar.

I started on a Starcaster 7 or 8 months ago and still have it. Got a good deal on it.
The electronics were weak and the tuners weren't the greatest - both were easily correctable.
But the fit and finish are great. Real nice tone and sustain. The maple neck is actually birds eye maple, which was quite a surprise for a made in China product.
Neck is thick, as I learn more I guess it is actually a U shape.

But very playable and very solid. I keep GHS Boomers on it.
Don't play it much since I bought my Highway one, but I still play it and don't plan on getting rid of it anytime soon.
