On his twenty-first birthday, Chuck Berry leaves jail after serving three years for armed robbery. He would go on to hang bumpers on cars in an automotive factory, a janitor in an apartment building, and then as a beautician before recording "Maybellene" for Chess Records in 1955.

October 18, 1956
21 year old Elvis Presley pulls into a Memphis gas station where he starts to attract a crowd of autograph seekers. After repeatedly asking Elvis to move on so he can resume normal business, station manager Edd Hopper slaps Presley on the head and finds himself on the receiving end of a punch in the eye from Elvis. Station employee Aubrey Brown tries to help his boss, but is no match for Presley. After police are called, Hopper and Brown are charged with assault and are eventually fined $25 and $15 respectively.

Playing lead guitar, Paul McCartney makes his first appearance with The Quarry Men at the New Clubmoor Hall Conservative Club, in Norris Green, Liverpool. The band's line-up was John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Eric Griffiths, Colin Hanton and Len Garry. A nervous McCartney flubs the solo on "Guitar Boogie", but the group is still booked as a regular attraction at the Saturday night dances.

The evils of Rock 'n' Roll were front page news again when 75 teenagers were arrested at a concert in Kansas City after a drunken brawl broke out at the Municipal Auditorium.

The Scotland Yard Drug Enforcement Squad search John Lennon's Montague Square home and find a quantity of marijuana. Lennon and Yoko Ono are promptly charged with possession and willful obstruction of a search. The pair were released on bail the same afternoon and later paid a 150 Pound fine.

October 18. 2016 On his 90th birthday, Chuck Berry announced his first new album in 38 years. He dedicated the LP, simply called "Chuck", to his wife of 68 years, Thelmetta. November 1, 1894
William Donaldson and James H. Hennegan published their first edition of Billboard as "A monthly resume of all that is new, bright and interesting on the boards." The eight page magazine was "devoted to the interests of advertisers, poster printers, bill posters, advertising agents & secretaries of fairs." It later began reporting on circuses, carnivals, vaudeville and other forms of live entertainment before focusing on motion pictures and later still, the music industry. The cost of that initial publication was 10 cents or 90 cents a year.

November 1, 1958
Communist East Germany leaders dub Elvis Presley as "Public enemy number one." An East Germany youth publication wrote: "The 23 year old star Presley is no artist and enjoys only limited brain power."

The Dave Clark Five appear on The Ed Sullivan Show singing their hit "Glad All Over". Sullivan likes them much better than The Rolling Stones, saying that unlike the latter, the DC5 are "nice, neat boys."

Born this day November 1, 1946, Born on this day, Rick Grech, bass, Family, Traffic, (1970 US No.15 & UK No.11 album 'John Barleycorn Must die'). Blind Faith, (1969 UK & US No.1 album 'Blind Faith'). And member of Airforce. Grech died on 17th March 1990.

Born this day November 1, 1962, Anthony Kiedis, singer and co-founder of Red Hot Chili Peppers. Had the 1992 UK No.26 single 'Under The Bridge', 2002 UK No.1 album By The Way and 2006 No.1 album Stadium Arcadium. In 2004, he published his autobiography, titled Scar Tissue, which became a New York Times Best Seller.

Tennessee Ernie Ford's "Sixteen Tons" begins a ten week stay on the Billboard chart, where it will eventually reach #1. The record will become one of the biggest selling singles of the 1950s.

November 2, 1956
Police use tear gas to break up a riot that broke out during a Fats Domino concert in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Fats and three of his sidemen suffer minor cuts.

November 2, 1959
Fifteen Elvis Presley fans are sent to jail in Germany after marching through the streets of Leipzig shouting "Long live Elvis Presley" and making unkind remarks about German music.

November 2, 1968
Appearing at Madison Square Garden on their farewell tour of the US, Atco Records presents Cream with a Platinum disc for $2 million worth of sales of the double album "Wheels of Fire".

Born this day November 2, 1937, American singer Earl Carroll lead vocalist for the doo-wop group The Cadillacs, the group's biggest hit was 'Speedo', Carroll's subsequent nickname. He joined The Coasters in 1961. Carroll died on Nov 25th 2012.

Emerson died on 11 March 2016 in Santa Monica, California, of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He had become "depressed, nervous and anxious" because nerve damage in his hands had hampered his playing.

Yeah I do to, it was sad. I did have the chance to work with him a couple of times, and he managed to blow up one of my crown PZM by not waiting till I came back with the proper power supply, I wasn't too upset, just out a mic. He was nice about it and had some remorse, and all around fun person to be around

Sam Cooke appears on The Ed Sullivan Show to sing "You Send Me", but is cut off before he can finish the number when the show ran out of time. He is invited to come back next month.

November 3, 1957
Sun Records releases "Great Balls of Fire" by Jerry Lee Lewis. It will be his biggest hit, reaching number two on the Billboard Pop chart, number three on the R&B list and number one on the Country And Western chart. The single sold a million copies during its first ten days of release and would go on to sell over five million copies world-wide.

November 3, 1963
Coming in at #83, The Kingsmen's version of "Louie Louie" enters the Billboard Hot 100 where it will peak at #2 during a sixteen week run. Costing just $50 to record in one take, the effort would go on to sell over a million copies and be ranked by Rolling Stone magazine at #54 on their list of The 500 Greatest Songs Of All Time.

Pink Floyd make their US debut at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. The tour will come to an early end when Syd Barrett displays increasingly strange behavior, refusing to lip sync to "Arnold Layne" on American Bandstand and refusing to answer questions on The Pat Boone Show.

A lock of John Lennon's hair was one of 350 items put up for auction on the website Julien's Live. Other items up for grabs included a long-lost acoustic guitar that belonged to Lennon, a drumhead from the Beatles' 1964 visit to The Ed Sullivan Show, Elvis Presley's 24 karat gold leaf grand piano, and several items from Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch.


Born on this day November 3, 1933, Born on this day, English composer and conductor John Barry. He composed the scores for 11 of the James Bond films between 1963 and 1987. He wrote the Grammy- and Academy Award-winning scores to the films Dances with Wolves and Out of Africa, as well as the theme for the British television cult series The Persuaders! Barry died of a heart attack on 31st January 2011 aged 77.

Britain's BBC restricts the airing of Frankie Laine's "Answer Me" and Lee Lawrence's "Crying In The Chapel" after religious groups object to the lyrics.

November 6, 1961
Jimmy Dean's "Big, Bad John" becomes the 100th US number one single of the Rock and Roll era. It would prove to be his only chart topper, although he would have another Top Ten record with "P.T. 109" the next year. Jimmy said he wrote the song in an hour and a half while flying to Nashville for a recording session.

November 6, 1965
Bill Graham opened The Fillmore West in San Francisco as a west coast partner to his Fillmore East in New York. The venue was the launching pad for The Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead, Big Brother And The Holding Company and many other local bands. Both sites remained in operation until 1971. Graham died in a helicopter crash in October, 1991 at the age of 60.

November 6, 1973
Singer Gram Parsons' manager Phil Kaufman is fined $300 for stealing Parsons' body from the Los Angeles International Airport. After he took the body, Kaufman had it cremated instead of taking it to the funeral home. Kaufman claimed it was Parsons' wish to be cremated.

The Sex Pistols play their first show at St. Martin's School of Art in London. The performance lasted about 10 minutes.

Born on this day, November 6, 1948, Glenn Frey, guitar, vocals, The Eagles, (1977 US No.1 & UK No.8 single 'Hotel California', plus 5 US No.1 albums. ‘Greatest Hits 1971-1975’ is the second biggest selling album in the world with sales over 30m). Solo (1985 UK No.12 single 'The Heat Is On'). Frey died on 18 Jan 2016 died at the age of 67 in New York City from complications arising from rheumatoid arthritis, colitis and pneumonia.

20-year-old Eddie Cochran makes his UK chart debut with "Summertime Blues" which will peak at #18. The song had already reached its highest spot of #8 on America's Billboard chart a week earlier. Cochran sang both the vocal and bass vocal, played all the guitar parts and added the hand clapping.

Ray Charles is arrested in Indianapolis after police discover marijuana and heroin in his hotel room.

November 7, 1970
MGM Records President Mike Curb announces that the company is dropping 18 acts from its roster in a move to discredit musicians who "exploit and promote hard drugs through music." Among the acts dropped are Connie Francis, and The Cowsills, but not Eric Burdon.

Rolling Stone reports that Ted Nugent has won the National Squirrel-Shooting Archery Contest by picking off a squirrel at 150 yards. Nugent also wiped out 27 more of the small mammals with a handgun during the three day event.

After using his guitar in court to show a jury how several hit songs have contained the same short series of notes, John Fogerty was found not guilty of plagiarizing his own record, "Run Through the Jungle" when he wrote "The Old Man Down The Road".
