October 9, 1971
John Lennon celebrates his 31st birthday at Yoko Ono's This Is Not Here exhibition at the Everson Art Museum in Syracuse, New York. Ringo Starr, Phil Spector, Bob Dylan, Frank Zappa and a host of Hollywood actors also stopped by to view Yoko's first major art show.

October 9, 1973
Elvis and Priscilla Presley are granted a divorce after six and half years of marriage. She is given property along with $725,000 and an additional $4,200 a month for the support of their five-year old daughter, Lisa Marie. The settlement also includes half the proceeds from the sale of an L.A. home and five percent of the total outstanding stock in two publishing companies. The couple emerge from a Santa Monica, California courthouse arm in arm, kiss and depart separately. In 2015 Priscilla would look back at her marriage to Elvis and say, "He was the father of my child and I learned so much from that man. I'm not saying that everything was wonderful, marriages have problems, and especially in that Rock 'n' Roll environment, but we had an amazing bond."

John Lennon and his wife Yoko celebrate his 35th birthday with the birth of their only child, Sean Taro Ono Lennon.

John Lennon releases "Starting Over", his first single in five years. At the end of December it would top the Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks and the UK chart for a week.

October 9, 1985
Marking what would have been John Lennon's 45th birthday, Yoko Ono formally dedicated a two and a half acre landscaped section in New York's Central Park called Strawberry Fields. The entrance to the memorial is located on Central Park West at West 72nd Street, directly across from the Dakota Apartments where Lennon had lived during the later part of his life and where he was murdered in 1980. To this day, fans still gather there to reflect and sing Lennon songs.

John Lennon's killer, Mark David Chapman was denied parole for a second time on October 9th, the same day that Lennon would have turned 62. The state parole board issued a statement that said releasing Chapman after 22 years in prison would "deprecate the seriousness" of the crime and while Chapman had "acceptable" behavior in prison, that didn't guarantee he wouldn't pose a threat to society. At his first parole hearing two years earlier, Chapman said he did not deserve to go free. The 48 year old prisoner lived in a housing unit separate from the general population for his own safety and worked as a clerk.

Most of George Harrison's solo music made its digital debut with the release of iTunes versions of his albums. Harrison's catalog was the last of the four Beatles' to go digital.

Paul McCartney, who has been a vegetarian for 30 years, was furious when he heard that a Liverpool branch of McDonald's restaurant displayed his picture, accusing them of using it to attract customers. Sir Paul was quoted as saying "What sort of morons do McDonald's think Beatles fans are?"

Paul McCartney surprised 400 students at the Frank Sinatra School for the Arts with a performance of a 13 song set consisting of tunes from his latest album along with Beatles and Wings classics. Macca delighted the assembly by telling them, "This beats going to class," as he kicked off the show with "Eight Days A Week".

He was shot dead in New York by Mark Chapman on 8th December 1980.

Born on this day October 9, 1944 John Entwistle, bassist with The Who, nicknamed The Ox. The Who scored the 1965 UK No.2 single 'My Generation' plus over 20 other UK Top 40 hits, as well as 16 US Top 40 singles. In the early days of The Who, once the lineup had stabilised and it was settled that Roger Daltrey was to be the front man, Entwistle started to dye his fair hair black, and continued to so do until the 1980s. Entwistle died in Las Vegas on 27th June 2002, one day before the scheduled first show of The Who's US tour.

Born on this day October 9, 1948 Jackson Browne, singer, songwriter, (1978 UK No.12 single 'Stay', 1978 album 'Running On Empty', 1982 US No. 7 single 'Somebody's Baby').

Born on this day October 9,1975 Sean Taro Ono Lennon was born, the only child of John Lennon by Yoko Ono. John Lennon retired from music for five years to become a house-husband. Sean went on to become a singer, songwriter, musician and actor.

1964, During a UK tour The Beatles appeared at De Montfort Hall in Leicester. Ringo Starr drove himself to the venue after taking delivery of a brand new Facel Vega, apparently reaching speeds of 140 MPH on the M6 motorway.

What a beautiful set of wheels that Facel Vega was (unless you had the troublesome failure of the French engine, and the best if you had one of 30 Austin Healy versions). It looked like a baby Lincoln with a Mercedes front end. Actually it ended up being that a Mercedes looked like a Facel front end. Nice taste Ringo. 8)

The real Eleanor Rigby died in her sleep of unknown causes at the age of 44. The 1966 Beatles' song that featured her name wasn't really written about her, as Paul McCartney's first draft of the song named the character Miss Daisy Hawkins. Eleanor Rigby's tombstone was noticed in the 1980s in the graveyard of St. Peter's Parish Church in Woolton, Liverpool, a few feet from where McCartney and Lennon had met for the first time in 1957.

Berry Gordy's first release on the newly established Motown Records, "Bad Girls" by The Miracles, enters the Billboard Pop chart. Unfortunately for all concerned, it will only stay there for two weeks, then fade into oblivion.

Gerry Marsden of Gerry And The Pacemakers marries the secretary of his fan club, Pauline Behan. When Jerry first asked her for a date, she was George Harrison's girlfriend, but George was away in Hamburg and so she accepted. After one particular falling out, Gerry wrote "Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying" for Pauline, which touched her so much, she quickly patched things up.

Rod Stewart officially became Sir Roderick David Stewart when he received knighthood from Prince William at Buckingham Palace in London, England. In a statement he told the press, "I've led a wonderful life and have had a tremendous career thanks to the generous support of the great British public. The unit measured about four inches high and less than a foot wide and mounted under the instrument panel. The seven inch discs spun at 16 2/3 rpm and required almost three times the number of grooves per inch as an LP. A set of 35 classical recordings were available that provided between 45 and 60 minutes of uninterrupted music. The players would be discontinued in 1961.

The movie tells the story of a disc jockey, Alan Freed, who tries to prove to teenagers' parents that Rock 'n' Roll is harmless and won't turn their kids into juvenile delinquents.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience play their first major concert at the Olympia Theatre in Paris in front of an audience of 14,500. The British press call Hendrix "The wild man of Pop."

2016, David Bowie and Prince were both new entries in the latest list of top-earning dead celebrities compiled by Forbes. Prince's pre-tax income from 1 October 2015 to 1 October 2016 was estimated at $25m (£20.5m) by the business magazine, putting him fifth in the list. Bowie, meanwhile, was ranked at 11th for an estimated income of $10.5m (£8.5m). Both, however, are dwarfed by Michael Jackson who topped the list once again with a record-breaking estimated income of $825m (£672.8m).

18 year old Richard Penniman, who is already using the stage name Little Richard, makes his first recordings for RCA Camden at the studios of Atlanta radio station WGST. His early attempts imitated the Gospel style of late-1940s Jump Blues artist Billy Wright who was a friend that set him up with the opportunity to record.

October 16, 1954
Two weeks after his appearance at Nashville's Grand Ole Opry, Elvis Presley performs on the Country music radio program, Louisiana Hayride, broadcast live on KWKH in Shreveport. After an enthusiastic reception from the audience, Presley is booked to appear every week for a year at $18 per show. His sidemen, Bill Black and Scotty Moore are paid $12 each.

October 16, 1957
Sam Cooke's "You Send Me" is released by Keen Records. The single will be his biggest hit, topping the Billboard chart and selling two-and-a-half million copies.
