She was the inspiration for The Beatles track 'Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds', written mostly by John after Julian showed his father a nursery school drawing he called Lucy - in the sky with diamonds, depicting his classmate.

October 4, 1970, a very sad day for me too, mud.

Just 12 weeks earlier (July 1, 1970) Janis came over to my studio camera and gave me a bear hug in her big Cher like vest. I was 23 years old and Janis was 27. She had stopped by my work for an interview just prior to a concert in the stadium behind us. (See article below).

Even then it was easy to see that Pearl was struggling. Her manager elaborated on this with a whisper to me. I didn’t care for that, and I felt for Janis. She was obviously aware and approachable to real friends amongst the onlookers who were there just because of her celebrity. Unfortunately, she could have used more help. It appeared to me that others had simply given up on her. I can’t say for sure, but that was the brief impression I got.

It didn’t help that on that performance day she had begun her spaced out image before her common practice of, perhaps, consuming a full bottle of Southern Comfort per show. No matter. She was Janis.

I got to meet the real woman, and when I heard the news of her passing it was a personal shock and yet, in some way, not unexpected. I thought of the talent we lost, but even more, I mourned for the real Janis.

Every time I hear her singing there’s a little bit of her soul reaching out, and it takes a piece of my heart. I miss her.
