I heard about this yesterday. Pretty sad news, I liked a lot of movies and characters he was in and did. RIP, Harry. :(

He was one of those guys that when you mention his name people don't know who he is, but when you show them his picture they say "Oh that guy!".

I liked him a lot.

I know what it is to have great supporting actors that neither upstage a lead performer nor lower the standard of the overall production. Harry Dean Stanton was one of these actors.

Take a look at his resume. Better still look at his movies.

One of the greatest musicians who ever lived. He will be deeply missed by rock and rollers everywhere. :(

I remember him as the complaining BAR man in the very beginning of the Gregory Peck film Pork Chop Hill in 1959, one of my all time favorites as a kid. Than as a poetry-reciting beatnik in the Danny Kaye film The Man from the Diner's Club in 1963.
RIP Harry Dean Stanton

Wikipedia: Stanton also occasionally toured nightclubs as a singer and guitarist, playing mostly country-inflected cover tunes. He appeared in the Dwight Yoakam music video for "Sorry You Asked",[13] portrayed a cantina owner in a Ry Cooder video for "Get Rhythm", and participated in the video for Bob Dylan's "Dreamin' of You". He worked with a number of musical artists, Dylan, Art Garfunkel, and Kris Kristofferson among them, and played harmonica on The Call's 1989 album Let the Day Begin.

Here he is performing with Kris Kristofferson:
