Hurricane Forumites and Forumettes Check In, Please.

Many members such as ZZDoc, Glen, Rebecca, Eric, Mike, Steve, Omar, and others have been tragically hit or touched by Hurricane Harvey and Irma. Others are expected to follow, especially in the Caribbean, and in eastern USA as the storms head north.

No matter what the hurricane or where you are, members here are thinking of you, and we'd love to hear from you.

No doubt you are busy before, during, and after such a catastrophe. We can certainly understand that, and wish you all the best for a speedy recovery.

If you find time to say a simple hello, or just care to tell us of your experience, or have help by exchanging current information, here's a dedicated place where we'd love to hear how you and yours are making out.

Take care and be safe everyone.
Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Best,
FSB

If it's been awhile since your last post, we'd love an update. Thanks.

Omar checking in.

I am please to say that my family came through safe and dry. I did have any damage to the house or car.

Power just came back on last night.

Prep paid off in a big way. My wife had filled all the open spaces in the freezer with zip lock bags half filled with water several days before, after we lost power we did not open the freezer door until the power came back on. We did not lose anything. We had food, water, flashlights and cell phones.

We learned the lights with incandescent bulbs need to be replaced with led. our old flashlights burned though batteries while the led lights still have the original batteries. We also had these thin power packs to charge the cell phones, I have a iPhone 7 and I can charge it 10-14 times from this pack. They are vary small and thin, wonderful things.

I did lose all my tropical fish, I have 75 gallon tank and they started to die after about 6 hours of no power. I had the last one die a few hours before the power came back on. They will be replaced.

There are so many people less fortunate than I. So many lost homes. I saw a few videos of the Keys and it is bad, they took a full cat 4 hit. Miami has been hit hard.

The only reports of lost life that I have heard in the Tampa area are people who died after the storm. I know 2 died cutting up downed trees.

Well I am praying for the other members that have not checked in yet.

God bless all of you for your prayers and best wishes, it helps a lot more than you think to know people are concerned for your safety and well being. Thank you!

Very happy you and your family survived Irma and that you did well under the circumstances, Omar. That was a great idea to usd the zip lock bags with water.

I know your tips will be of interest and thanks for posting here as this thread is what it is and will, I think, make it easy to check in with everyone affected or thought to be affected by the storms.

Take care, best to your family, and stay safe.

FSB

TIP
Be careful with chain saws because they, and the related debris, are said to be the cause of many accidents during cleanup.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those who did not fare so well in Florida, Texas, and the Caribbean. It has been reported the damages in Texas could reach around 75 billion dollars.

Howdy Yawl'!!! To my second family here. I just got my electric power restored today at noon. Three days without power was getting old, for not having the A/C running. We did at least have a generator running for the refrigerator, some lights, and fans. We got through it ok, better than some folks in the area did.

Fantastic, my friend. Great to hear from you. :D We wuz worried. It appears that your neighbourhood took a beating too. That must have been an experience that lingers on today.

Having that electricity is a good thing. Hard to believe how much it affects everything. In another post I mentioned that next year we are considering a fireplace that doesn't require AC ignition and supplies standby heat if required. Good for 40 below. I don't know how I would find an air conditioner replacement though should the power go out as temperatures are not as hot as you get it, but they climb higher than the rest of the country. I'm guessing a generator is the answer. We seldom lose power here like our neighbours to the south. Power is government run, and we have lots of resources, and we export a lot of it. It does happen though, but more so in the east with ice storms etc. So the generator for me, would sit idle except for that very odd occasion. Maybe a solar panel solution would work.

I know you'll have plenty on your plate at this time, looking forward to the updates and stories; but, when times are more relaxed we'll chat over some bowls of Jello.

Best to you and the family, Glen.
Stay safe and take care Mr. Nylon.

Good to have you back.

Thanks. Good to be back.
It's a lot better now, than when I was a kid living in South Florida. We used to lose power for 3-4 days, but no generator, no nothing. There wasn't the warning systems we have today with NOAA, the National Hurricane Center. They do a darn good job, and probably don't get that extra serving of Jello they deserve.

Glad you made through safely! I am not afraid to say I was really worried about Irma, a Cat 4 or 5 is nothing to mess with.

Here's to the unsung heroes at the Hurricane Center.

That's good to hear that you didn't get hit too hard and now got power back. I have to check in and see how my St. Petersburg peeps are doing with that situation. I'll bet my parents are glad they decided to move when they did, although North Carolina isn't exactly exempt from this kind of weather.

It unfortunately is going to be a posable reactivation of this thread, with Hurricane Nate closing in on the Gulf Coast of the U.S. Hang in there folks. Here's hoping that everyone up there weathers the storm out safely. Yawl keep your heads down! No smoken' & joken' about it. If they advise you to evacuate, and you can, GET THE HELL OUT OF DODGE!Image
