Camille, yep remember her well. I was a 5yo kid living in Largo, Fla. We had floods and moderate winds where I lived. Alligators and snakes where the concern at my house, on the 2nd floor of an apartment building.

Best wishes for anyone in Florida & Cuba, keep loved ones close and as safe as possible.

Its possible Cuba could help Florida w/ this storm, just by getting in the way a little.

Irma is a complete beast of a storm.

As it appears at this time, the west coast of Florida is going to get the direct impact of Irma. Irma is probably going to hit Key West, and then it should make direct impact on Fort Meyers, and later into Tampa. Reports are saying that Tampa hasn't had a direct Hurricane hit since 1923.
Where I'm at on the east coast, we just had a squall line come through, and that was nothing compared to what will come through here later in the evening. I may get some Hurricane strength gusts come through tomorrow as the storm is across the state in Fort Meyers, but not the direct hit.
Any one on the west coast, it maybe getting to late to evac. Reports of traffic stalled on the interstate, and cars running out of gas is unfortunately getting more prevalent.
Hang in there guys. Image

Hey, brother Glen. It seems that a little good news in the storm shift with your beautiful home location will be beneficial to some degree, thankfully. :)
On the other hand the Floridian West Coast doesn't look great. I needn't elaborate on what the expectation is that the Keys and coastline are in for.
I spent some time looking at recent advancements of hurricane building. Some really good things for sure. Sadly, we may see a real test this time around. It's not unlike the earthquake building changes. The difference being that earthquake real tests are happening all the time. I have no doubt that hurricane safety odds are better with the hurricane related improvements. As far as flooding, well . . . water will go where the weakest point is.

I also saw opposing ideas behind hurricane preparation and the taping of windows. Hurricane tape or not. By the Alaska/BC border, I once dodged debris on a stormy night for over an hour that included delinquent logs and debris to the left and right, above and below my wheel house in a wooden boat the size of a trawler in open Pacific raging water. Two spot lights, several lookouts, a spinning window to look through, and my luck with the wheel got us through safely. Bravery had nothing to do with it, I was too busy to be scared. No King Lobster were involved or hurt on that Naval vessel though.
Comparisons of sea, wind, and rain are different, but close enough that I would not put much faith in tape when debris makes contact. It may minimize the breakage, but breakage in a mid to high level hurricane is subject to surroundings with wind and water to follow. A tornado can from outside throw a 2x4 or bigger into one end of a house through to the other end in some cases. Smaller debris and lesser winds can be just as dangerous. Unlike taking refuge in a land locked home, I had the option of dodging the debris to prevent damage to my windows and shelter. Just my two cents. YMMV

My thoughts and wishes along with everyone here goes to those in the path of Irma and her brothers and sisters.

I'll look forward to talking Jello with you, Glen - after it's over.
Thanks, for keeping us informed.

Stay safe and hug someone.

It's getting near Jello Time here, and with us being on the right side of the Hurricane, Tornados are showing up all over the area. About an hour or so ago, had a 50 MPH squall line come through at my place.

That Jello will get you through alot. I have lime Jello in the fridge. Maybe I'll pay it a visit after I drink the Cotes du Rhone. :D
Be careful with those tornados, Glen. Throw some Jello at them pesky PITAs.

As always

It certainly was quite an 'entertainment' here in Boca Raton. The curtain rose Saturday and by Sunday at 2:45 p.m. a particularly heavy, tornadic thunderstorm felled what we were to later learn were four Banyan trees which took out the power to a chunk of my community. The power did not return until around noon the following Friday. I can concur with Mr. Nylon as to the ferocity of the weather. I was following it's progress on one of Palm Beach county's most reliable TV stations until the power went out. By Tuesday evening my wife and my 92 yo father-in-law had just about had it. Managed to secure a flight for the two of them to NJ where they stayed with family until Tuesday past. I stayed on with my yorkies, dealing with the heat and humidity, nursing the ice, and the power to my cell phone and radios. Most of the damage in my club community was to foliage and patio enclosures. Friends in Tampa lucked out as well. I can't imagine what the result might have been if that storm had followed it's original path because the density and urban development of Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, and Martin counties is different from Florida's west coat. Judging what we've seen from Puerto Rico, the impact of a Cat 4/5 storm in those areas would have been horrific. As it is, the effects of the Cat 1 storm we experienced hit some communities really hard. Witness the deaths in that nursing home due to inadequate cooling.

I know, it was too much fun in the Boca area. I lost power Saturday morning at 5:45 AM, and got it back on the following Wed. at noon. The heat in the house was getting on the bad side if you had respiratory issues.

Roger that!! My father-in-law suffers from COPD and my wife, lack of resiliency and adaptability. They wanted me to accompany them but the short notice made it very difficult to factor in the materiel necessary for the management of the dogs because we had to cushion for at least a two week stay given the uncertainty of things. As it was, both you and I had 5 days without power and the same difficult circumstances indoors. In addition, our hot water heater gave up the ghost so, had we all left together, we would have returned to a well saturated garage and no hot water. My having stayed behind faciliated getting all back in order by the time they returned and significantly curtailed water damage to less than 3 square feet of industrial carpet. We are going to explore the logistics and cost of a gas-fired auxilliary generator which will require the installation of an underground LPG tank. This community, in its inception did not see the wisdom of the additional cost needed to pipe natural gas to the homes.

We don't have gas lines in my area either. I have a generator that handles the refrigeration, microwave, some lights, and some fans, but not the A/C, or water heater. It's a continuous run generator, and it ran all day and night till the power was restored.
