Forum member Art Rice, of Largo Florida, passed away at 6:00 a.m. this morning after a long battle with cancer. His daughter kept his Facebook page alive and connected with hers so that family and friends might be advised. I don't recall if Art used a screen name. Brad had been advised through private communications that all was not going well with Art. Art was well aware of the fact that the hearts and minds of the Forum were with him and his family offers the deepest appreciation for this. Another six-stringer gone home.

Ave atque vale!

Doc

Roger that. Still waiting to see which way this bird's gonna fly. I'm beginning to see that the only way to handle these situations, particularly where water is concerned, is to have it in place a good two weeks out, no matter where the storm ends up.

An unfortunate task at that.

So sorry to hear about Art, and thank you for letting us know, Doc.

Condolences to family and friends.

Take care with all that you have to deal with Irma, Doc.

They've said late Friday is the last of the planes in and out of the area.

The good wishes much appreciated. My wife is one of those individuals who likes to 'wait and see where it's going'. She's the type who would have remained in Pompeii long after the first blast. It's a tough call down here for a 'cry wolf scenario'. This morning, fully convinced that she was indeed now standing in front of the fan, she was scrambling to find a flight. To borrow from high school vernacular....'tough noogies!" United wasn't booking at all. Our desired destination for Southwest was full. These airlines want to get their equipment out of FloridaIn tornado alley one at least has the option of building and stocking a storm cellar where basements can be done. Florida does not do basements well. Based on the track out about 10 days, one would have been obliged to do all the necessary preparations for a serious storm, hold mail, and get out of town. Try that at the height of the season. We have three storms on the map presently, and minus Harvey which was four in the past month. How many times can you leave town? We have close friends who flew to Nashville Wednesday to stay with cousins. I have a cousin there as well. No way I would go northeast to escape an Atlantic coast hurricane. You go northwest away from the Southeast and Gulf states. My end of the county and those south of me dodged the bullet last October. The storm path will be just the reverse this year. It will go offshore about where it came on shore last year. The other thing I don't understand are the gas lines. Are people hoarding for generators, anticipating short supply across the next several weeks? I'm sure there are business people who use nearly a tank daily in their work. It's incredible.

It is was it is bro. Stay tuned.

Doc

Ditto. We lost Martian to the same disease and his wife predeceased him by not much. She suffered stage 4 breast cancer and refused treatment. Bummer.

I hear ya, Doc. Thanks, for your observations.

A few years back we had an F5 tornado that, had I driven down my street about 30 minutes away, I would have run into it. Fortunately, except for a few silos, we got away lucky. It was a wake up call since this was something new. My wife grew up in this house and we know of no other tornado until recently. You don't get much notice, and you are right that you can't run or hide.

I understand that you can't always evacuate too. But, I'm not so sure the resources and support are always equal. It's interesting about the available or lack of flights out. I wonder how that compares with earlier hurricane warnings. It seems that Irma is not your typical, "Oh, here comes another one".

I just posted some thoughts on evacuation on my thread Hurricane Tips, Help, and related. I do know one size does not fit all, and I wish you and your wife the safest route possible.

Keep us posted on your well being.

Best

I lost my kid brother last year, 6 years younger than I from the big C that inflicted Art and Roy. They are missed.

So sorry to hear about Art. I did not know him but it is very sad. I lost my sister to cancer not long ago. My prayers go out for Art, his family and loved ones.
