I saw Steely Dan twice. The first time was back in the 70s when Walter was transitioning
from bass to lead guitarist after "Skunk" had left to go with The Doobies and he was a great
guitarist. Then about 5 years ago saw them with Jon Herington doing most of the lead work
and Walter only doing some occasional fills and riffs. Walter sang a bit, but was very low key in the show.

I had just read the article about this right before I logged in here. RIP, Walter. :(

Steely Dan - Walter Becker

If I haven't worn out my Gaucho cassette yet, I will. It went with me everywhere because I not only dug the songs, but also the production. I was highly disappointed when I discovered that Steely Dan was, at that time, a studio group and that I needn't expect a concert in my neighbourhood any time soon. That didn't stop me from being a fan.

I thank you Walter for your consummate contribution to some terrific sounds that awakened my senses. RIP.

Grim news. The Dan was one of my favorite bands from the '70s. Saw them twice and I have almost everything they've done both as a band and the solo disks. RIP WB.

Sad, Walter is kind of a legend around here where I work ; I was not working here when they were here though

Steely Dan co-founder Donald Fagen quickly released a statement about the death of his partner Walter Becker, the only other full-time member of the indelible longtime rockers.
His lengthy and honest statement reads:
Walter Becker was my friend, my writing partner and my bandmate since we met as students at Bard College in 1967. We started writing nutty little tunes on an upright piano in a small sitting room in the lobby of Ward Manor, a mouldering old mansion on the Hudson River that the college used as a dorm.

Great post, Mud.

Bard College - fitting name for association with Walter and Donald.

Before bard was a romanticized poet/lyricist, bard was derogatory. It meant roving musician. Steely Dan's studio era would fall into the first category.
