Chad is seriously ill, but first a little background.

Johnny Kidd did it first at No. 1 on England's charts, Australia's Normie Rowe did it there at No. 1, America's Twiliters did well in New England but did not chart nationally, and then (in a studio where my job would soon be for 10 years) this guy called Chad came along and did a cover with a band called Chad Allan and The Expressions. Their copy went No. 1 in Canada, No. 22 in USA, and No. 27 in Australia. "Guess Who?" (later Guess Who and no ?) was the label credit given by the record company. The rest is history. The Who eventually played Shaking All Over and the Guess Who did My Generation because of audience confusion (according to Burton Cummings).

Then in 1965:

Chad left in 1966 turning vocals over to Burton Cummings, continued to work with other music projects, and formed Brave Belt with Randy Bachman, and that evolved into Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) without Chad who left before that.

Chad has a history of vocal chord problems, but he continued to entertain, often for senior homes. Here he is in 2010 with friends.

Move ahead to today. This past Wednesday Chad had a serious stroke and is hospitalized in BC at the age of 74. We can only wish Chad and his wife Christine the best with hope for a speedy recovery. He is a talent, but even more a swell guy.

That's sad to hear. :( Guess Who are a pretty killer band. I remember we were talking about them a while back on another thread. I hope he has a speedy recovery and no further issues.

Thanks, Paul. Me too. Chad (aka Allan Kobel). You'd like him, everybody does.

There have been a lot of Guess Who changes, but that's kept the rock going. They have a following of many pros in the industry with whom they've struck up friendships with too.

How well known were "The Devrons" up in Canada?

Burton Cummings is one of my favorite singer/songwriters. I just love the way he talks about
the situation during the intro of this song they used to cover:

Thanks, for your post, Mud.

Mike: Winnipeg's Dev(e)rons did not make it big on the charts, and, not long after they recorded songs in a local radio station and layed down songs on vinyl in nearby Minneapolis, there was a Cummings migration to the Guess Who whom the Deverons (not to be confused with America's Devrons) opened for.

Even Chad and The Expressions had difficulty hitting the airwaves until the record brilliantly identified them as The Guess Who rather than The Expressions.

Local bands had to fight the big boy record distribution which had their ways of monopolizing back in the day. Once in a while, a band would sneak through and get that break.

As you know, bands with dreams of making it, were keen to cut records, and many had managers drawn from or help from those in broadcasting with connections or facilities. A local Music Director helped the Devrons and did that very thing. Alas, it was not to be. The band, for the most part, was a regional hit. They played around town and got local tv and area coverage including in a community centre just blocks from my home. TV was mostly live in those days and it was quick to support bands which also supported TV production.

Meanwhile, some fella by the name of Neil Young had made a dent from this neighbourhood. First with a band called The Squires and then he hit the folk scene. A stone's throw away across the border was Neil's influence - a Minnesotan called Bob Dylan, and then there was a Saskatchewan girl called Joni Mitchell who played local clubs with Neil.

Competition was crazy. Some made it and some . . . well, history speaks for itself, and Guess Who was there - Chad!

Lots of fun. Not like watching the record spin or the 180BPM MP3 playlist. :P

Very interesting, FSB and thanks for that link. I also clicked on Bachman-Cummings as I have
their music as well.

Randy Bachman has also played on at least one CD that I know of with a local guy who's
son is good friends with my son. His name is Gerry Beaudoin.

Recording session with Randy Bachman (l to r: Jay Geils, Gerry Beaudoin, Randy Bachman, Gordon, John Turner, Duke Robillard)

That is really cool, Mike. What a treat that must have been for those gents to have worked with Randy.
Pretty good looking group there. Looks like they were Taking Care of Business. Great addition to the travels and story of the legendary Bachman.

Thanks, for the Cummings clip too. That had a groove of of it's own.

One thing about Burton and Randy is that they are always eager to talk about where they've been, where they are, and where they are going. Randy had a radio show going here last year. He loves passing on music history of Rock 'n Roll. Have a listen as he gives us a brief lesson in the history of Canadian Rock (music included).

Although, they moved away to the coast, they're never (literally) far from home. There's no lack of nostalgia, and the Guess Who (and afterwards) are well documented, and that continues to be so to this day. Gerry added to the nostalgia.
Some may question how this relates to Chad. Well, Chad was multi talented as were those who came with him, and Chad gave all this a kick start.

The latest news that I could gather was a report from yesterday that Chad is mostly unresponsive, with smiles, eyes open, and some recognition to those who surround him with love.

I found this moments ago. Pretty comprehensive; but, if you are into the Guess Who, Randy, Neil Young, and others, this will give you Chad and much more. Photos, videos, music, and articles. You might want to grab a beverage and some munchies. :P

Cheers!
